Bart on the Bridge
Bart Simpson is one of several animations to be illuminated on the Sydney Harbour Bridge tonight as part of the New Year’s Eve celebrations.Artistic Director Wayne Harrison said Bart would be part of an amusing, unfolding narrative building across the night.”From 8pm, you’ll see a series of tricks every five minutes which I think will be very amusing,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald….

First Review: Foxtel in 2007
As the leader in Pay TV (or as they prefer it to be called, ‘subscription TV’) Foxtel had itself a nice little year. Little in terms of its ratings, but mighty in its impact on the diminishing Free to Air audience.Foxtel traditionally doesn’t release many numbers because it argues that having multiple channels and multiple viewings (aka repeats) is an unfair yardstick against FTA. Of course they’re right but it also helps them to conceal low-performing …
First Review: SBS in 2007
SBS may have had another year of anti-Bush documentaries and global-warming lessons, but let’s face it, their year was dominated by one issue: Mary Kostakidis quitting the broadcaster after 21 years. To have an ambassador in such a public spat was an unforgivable state of affairs, overshadowing all achievements for the network. It began, ominously, when World News Australia relaunched as a one hour, dual-driven service with Stan Grant by Kostakidis’ side. …

Gallery: Gone in 2007
They came and they went. Some were favourites we’ll always remember. Many we have already forgotten. In 2007 there were sentimental finales, long overdue finales, shows that were “rested”, some that were axed in the US before they even made it here, a few that we hope will still make it here, several that just weren’t renewed, many that were dropped without trace, and a few who retired from their role. Here is a cattle …
First Review: Super Comet
Where the hell is Bruce Willis when we need him? He’s needed to save us from the Super Comet, both the meteor, and very arguably the docudrama too.Docudramas are always tricky beasts. Trying to combine both factual info with re-enactments is no fun, and this hypothetical made by Discovery Channel isn’t exactly top of the heap. The acting is pretty shoddy, the cliches abound -but the subject matter is just so darn spellbinding it’s …
First Review: TEN in 2007
TEN’s year was something of a disappointment, but like all good PR spinners, they managed to focus on the good stuff: The 2007 AFL Grand Final, Thank God You’re Here a revived Rove, it’s best 18-49 figure, a win in daytimes overall and another win in 16-39.What it tactfully left out was that it lost the demographic it said it was pursuing, 18-49, to Seven.TEN had barely finished celebrating New …

David Letterman has struck a deal with the Writers’ Guild of America that will see him return to television next Wednesday night (US) – with writers.Worldwide Pants production company reached an agreement on Friday proving, claims the WGA, that the union is open to negotiation.”We’re happy to be going back to work, and particularly pleased to be doing it with our writers,” Letterman said.”This is not a solution to the strike, which unfortunately …
2007: In Memoriam
Charmaine Dragun was but one of many we lost this year, though her passing last month was particularly tragic.Other notable passings included Chris Mainwaring, again in tragic circumstance, host Stan Zemanek, and TV Critic Robert Fidgeon -whose work this writer would again like to acknowledge. And so as 2007 comes to a close, here in no particular order is a roll call of those we remember. Darlene Conley, Sally Spectra,The Bold …
