NYE 08: Fireworks over the TV

Network TEN will again screen the New Year’s Eve fireworks over Sydney Harbour.

They will be hosted by Kim Watkins and Andrew G with performances by Sarah Blasko, Natalie Gauci and Amy Pearson.

Last year the TEN telecast copped a lot of criticism for some of the live commentary. A promotion for Priscilla the Musical, and most notably, the antics of Matthew Newton on The Big Night In were also hotly debated.

TEN will screen the “family fireworks” from 8:30pm and rejoin the “midnight fireworks” later. But TEN may need a quick lesson in the Gregorian Calendar before the year is out – they actually have the event titled as “New Year’s Eve 2007.”

The Nine Network meanwhile will ring in the New Year with What A Year, New Years Eve Party Zone (Richard Wilkins’ hosted music clips) and Fireworks in the City from Melbourne.

Meanwhile a fireworks factory blaze in Sydney is said to have jeopardised the events in Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

  1. Im surprised you guys arent out on NYE night.
I havnt been home for a NYE since I was 14 ad even if I was home the last thing I would be doing is watching TV worrying about the coverage of all the people out there celebrating it.
They say if you dont like it dont watch it, but in this case if you dont like out, go the hell out already.

  2. While I personally still view Dec 31 as NYE 2008, in fairness to TEN if the Sydney City Council has titled it NYE 2007 then it makes sense for TEN to follow suit, given they are a sponsor.

  3. This is the first time I’ve ever said this, but I preferred Channel Nine’s coverage of NYE. It was more classy and respected to the “Yeah, rock on!” attitude of Ten’s.

  4. I agree about NYE 2007 – it falls on December 31st, 2007. To call it NYE 2008 would confuse everybody. A clumsy way of referring to it using 2008 would be, “The Eve of the New Year 2008” or “The Eve of the Year 2008”, neither of which would catch on 🙂 I don’t think I’ve ever heard New Year’s Eve referred to as anything but that of the year in which it falls (i.e. not the year it precedes).

  5. Seven is screening what they are calling a “Beatles Marathon” on NYE.

First a concert, then the movie Help!

Then at 11.30pm they have a bit of coverage “Plus, get a sneak peek at what’s coming up on your favourite network next year.”

  6. Well, it *is* New Year’s Eve 2007.

This New Year’s Eve is December 31st, 2007.

If they’d just said “New Year” that’d be a different story, but they’re accurate on this one.

Oh, and Choose Blasko this NYE. You’ll be glad you did. 🙂

  7. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always referred to Dec 31 and Jan 1 as New Year’s Eve/Day as the year that it falls… i.e. NYE 07 and NYD 08

  8. What would 7 be doing for NYE? I would actually expect something flash from the network that won the ratings year to compete with 9 & 10. I live in Queensland where every year the Sydney NYE fireworks are always on a delay due to Daylight Saving. But I remember around a decade ago, they used to also screen the Brisbane fireworks as well on Seven, (which were shown live throughout Queensland.)

  9. “But TEN may need a quick lesson in the Gregorian Calendar before the year is out – they actually have the event titled as “New Year’s Eve 2007.””

I would have thought it was correct in calling the even New Year’s Eve 2007. The “Eve” means the night before New Year’s Day, like Christmas Eve is the night before Christmas Day. New Year’s Eve is on the 31st of December, 2007. New Year’s Day, on the other hand, is on the 1st of Janurary, 2008.
