Tassie viewers set for more local content
Tasmania’s digital TV network TDT must now add more local area content under new guidelines from the Australian Communications and Media Authority, effective January 1 2008.
TDT (Tasmanian Digital television) is owned by both Macquarie Media (now owners of Southern Cross Broadcasting) and WIN Corporation and screens Network TEN programming.
The new ACMA rulings will ensure that Tasmanian viewers see more material of local significance in news and local programming. The same ruling has been in effect for mainland regional networks since 2003.
Material of local significance is defined as “stories or news about people associated with the area, events that impact on the local community or organisations, or issues that arise in the area.” A points system credits regional networks each minute of local content.
Rather than divide the state into separate regions, ACMA has decreed Tasmania to qualify as both one licence and local area.
Due to the low penetration rate of digital receivers in Tasmania at present (approximately 31 per cent), ACMA has ruled TDT will be subject to alternative local content requirements for a limited transitional period until 31 December 2012.
