Ledger death ruled accidental

Heath Ledger died of accidental intoxication caused by a cocktail of painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs, officials have said.

Ledger had six prescription medicines including the drugs marketed as Xanax and Valium in his system when he died.

“Mr Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine,” the New York chief medical examiner’s office said in a statement.

“We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications,” it added.

Ledger’s family immediately released a statement reading, in part, “Today’s results put an end to speculation, but our son’s beautiful spirit and enduring memory will forever remain in our hearts,” and “Heath’s accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage.”

  1. Maybe the guy should have just had a break and gone on a holiday instead off loadin up on drugs.
It dont take an idiot (and HL was far from one) to realize 6 kinds of medications including sleeping pills and valiums aint gonna cause no problems.
I dont even take panadols! let alone stuff like that.

  2. At least the ongoing and inexplicable media demonisation of Stilnox is given a resounding “nyah” by this finding.

Jack and Stan; lots of people are prescribed six or more different medications at the same time. Obviously though, a single doctor would not have prescribed these six in one go. There is some onus on the patient to check drug interactions, something easily done online.

I see no suggestion in what we’ve heard of the report or in Ledger’s father’s comments about it to suggest he was “abusing” these drugs, by the way.

  3. I’m still amazed how nobody in the media wants to address the obvious: why is somebody taking a cocktail of drugs and for what purpose. Obviously, everybody is happy it’s not heroin, but how can we save future young lives if we don’t address such issue abuse of prescription drugs?

  4. What??? SIX prescription medicines???? Are we suddenly pretending that he never had a problem? It may not have been hard illegal drugs but it still shows that his life was a real mess underneath. Another Hollywood lifestyle induced tragedy!
    Jack!
