V8 Supercars a booming sport

The V8 Supercar Championships has enjoyed an increase of 25 percent in its viewers in 2007.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures reveal that, in terms of television ratings and attendances, motor sport and rugby league draw the highest figures behind AFL, the country’s most-watched sport.

V8 Supercars chief executive Tony Cochrane said that there had also been a significant growth in the sport’s international television numbers.

The 2008 season will be launched in Melbourne on Wednesday.

The season will be highlighted by a new street race in Hamilton, New Zealand, which has already drawn a sell-out crowd of 150,000.

Round 1 of the 2008 season begins in Adelaide February 21 – 24.

  1. I thought Seven did a great job with their coverage of the V8 Supercars.

Matt White was a great host, and their camera angles (particularly at Bathurst) captured the races perfectly.

Not a huge fan, but still looking forward to the ’08 season.
