60 Minutes of bizarre

By David Knox on March 13, 2008 / Filed Under News 4

60 Minutes last Sunday included a ‘tattoo story’ that arguably might have been better left to shock doc shows like Amazing Medical Stories.

This week they’re again going bizarro with an infamous story on a German man who ate his dinner guest -a guest who was willing to become the main course. Try to finish your dinner before watching.

It will also have stories on Aussie paparazzo Darryn Lyons and an item on binge drinking.

Press Release:

The Cannibal
If you saw him in the street, he wouldn’t rate a second glance. He looks so ordinary. But he’s not. Armin Meiwes is a cannibal. In March 2001, he killed a man and ate him with a glass of fine red wine. A crime so bizarre it horrified and mystified the world. You see, Meiwes’ victim was a willing accomplice, he actually wanted to be eaten. A rare case of what they call “love cannibalism”. Now you’re going to meet this quiet, unassuming man who became a monster. For the first time, he’ll tell his chilling story.

Mr Paparazzi
Where to begin? How about the purple mohawk haircut, the sequined jackets, the flash cars and the personal polo team? That’s Dazza! Darryn Lyons to his mum, but his victims call him Mr Paparazzi. The boy from Geelong, who’s made millions snooping on the stars. You can thank, or blame, Dazza for a lot of those celebrity pics you see in the gossip magazine every week. No-one’s safe from his cameras. Not Britney, not Brad and Angelina. Not even Princess Diana. Just last week, he was the star attraction at the inquest into her death. Why? He’s the one with those secret photos taken at the crash scene.

Punch Drunk
It’s not a pretty sight. These days, you take your life in your hands just going out for a drink with your mates. Late at night, early in the morning our cities are no-go areas, unless you’re all steamed up and looking for a fight. Too much booze, too much aggro – it’s a recipe for disaster. So much so, the government’s taken action. The Prime Minister says he wants to scare the living daylights out of teenage binge drinkers. Not before time. Liam Bartlett has been out on the mean streets with the police, seen the violence, met some of the tragic victims. And it sure scared the hell out of him.

I checked it out last night, it was disturbing and I had to switch over as the details just were to gross :P

Not really Thomas, News, Current Affairs and Sports fall under different guidelines to drama etc regardless of the timezone. They may need to give a warning depending on how far they go.

Wouldn’t covering a story on a cannibal at a 7:30pm Sunday prime-time slot be considered a breach of television classification guidelines?

bah – for as long as I can remember, 60 Minutes has been (at best) a slightly less low-brow version of A Current Affair.

But then, people still watch that, too.
