Far out! A Very Brady Musical will open as a stage production in June at LA’s Theatre West.
Like many Brady projects, it’s a family affair. Lloyd Schwartz, son of creator Sherwood Schwartz, has written the piece with his daughter, Hope. Hope’s husband Laurence Juber has co-written the songs. As it turns out, Juber was a guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings. The team previously penned Schwartz’s other stage production, Gilligan’s Island: The Musical, which has played on over 40 different stages.
Juber also composed for television productions The Real Gilligan’s Island, Still Brady reunion special, The Brady Bunch In The White House movie, The Bradys and A Very Brady Xmas.
In the early 1990s the stage revival of The Real Live Brady Bunch became such a cult that it toured the US and Australia. It’s mocking-but-affectionate tone was so successful it motivated Paramount to greenlight the hit movie The Brady Bunch Movie. One of the creators of the stage production, Jill Soloway, has since gone on to pen for Six Feet Under and Grey’s Anatomy.
Theatre West is a non profit arts organization in Hollywood. Established in 1962, it is the oldest continunally running arts organization in Los Angeles.
Last week Sherwood Schwartz was honoured on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
