Michael Johns across the Idol universe

Australian Michael Johns sang The Beatles’ “Across the Universe” as part of American Idol’s Beatlemania special yesterday, but didn’t get the unanimous praise he is used to receiving.

Only Paula Abdul seemed chuffed by the ballad, commending him for a quiet confidence and showing different aspects to his character.

  1. After reading this intro I was expecting him to be ordinary, but I was also very impressed this week.

    He was one of the best and it’s not Michael Hutchence he looks like, but Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins.

    If you are looking for an amazing version of Across the Universe then search for Chanel Cole’s version from Australia Idol. It is just beautiful.

  2. Agreed – didn’t mind him at all (and I side with Simon 99% of the time). Until now, I’ve found Michael to be too derivative of our ‘other’ Michael.. nice to see him drop the INXS posing this week. Liked Carly too, and the guy who sang Eleanor Rigby…

  3. I don’t know what those American judges were hearing last night. I thought Michael was by far the best singer. I really don’t get others being praised when they are off pitch and have no depth or strength to their voice. Only Carly was good enough I thought other than Michael. And I’m not being Aussie-biased either.Maybe its an international thing – Damien Leith started a trend!
