New Zealand drama Outrageous Fortune is to get a remake on the US ABC Network, under Rob Thomas -creator of Veronica Mars.
The series about a dysfunctional family with a father in jail (Arrested Development anyone?) is currently shooting its fourth season -the show aired in Australia, first on Nine and most recently on TEN.
The executive who greenlit the series in NZ, Beverley McGarvey is now Network Program Manager at TEN.

What’s worse is that the US version will be watered down (with no bad language or sexual content). It’s not like OF is the sort of show that wouldn’t translate to other markets (I mean, what’s to get? It’s not like it was ever a particularly “smart” show to begin with).
Once again this proves that the americans have no original ideas and that they have to copy shows from other parts of the world.
This is another US “remake” I won’t be bothering with…..
This rob thomas guy is full of original ideas isn’t he? First the remake of 90210 (which I’m looking forward to btw!) now this. And I think it’s US title is “five year plan”.
Agreed Dave, there may be the odd similarity, but they are defiantly two different shows, I’m a fan of both (but AD is brilliant in my eyes)but you could make up a hefty list of the things that aren’t similar.
The premise is similar.
But the tone is totally different (for instance one family is loaded, the other isn’t), and both stand in their own right. I wasn’t suggesting one was a rip-off at all, but the idea of a dysfunctional family with Dad in prison is definitely common to both,… no more, no less.
I couldn’t believe the similarities this show had to Arrested Development when it first started. I watched the first few eps and to me, it looked like a very lame copy of one of the greatest shows ever. Granted, Outrageous Fortune has grown into its own beast but I can’t forgive it for it’s unoriginal origins.
So remaking a show that was virtually a remake itself is typical of where we are today.

Kath & Kim’s yumour would be had to travel to middle America, so it will be interesting to see how HBO fares with Summer Heights High.
does every international show to go to America have to be remade?? I understand the non-english shows like Ugly Betty. But perfectly good, original english-speaking shows such as The Office, Kath & Kim etc. and now Outrageous Fortune are being remade. Its gotta stop!!
