Michael Johns may have had a great performance singing “We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions,” on this week’s American Idol but 17yo US kid David Archuleta (above) almost stumped the judges with his version of “You’re The Voice.”
Both Randy and Paula were confused about who sang the song. Simon Cowell chimed in with his knowledge saying “John Farnham.” But wait til’ you hear what else he had to say about the song.
Aussie Johns meanwhile absolutely wowed the audience with a powerhouse performance (above). “Star potential” said Cowell.
American Idol screens on Fox 8.

There’s an Italian version of the song floating around, too, called “la Scuola Dei Serpenti”. I don’t know who the artist is, but she’s a female singer and her version was released in 1982, four years before John Farnham recorded his version.
really matty?!!
Well great minds eh!… ehh!!
@the human dree, Hamish & Andy actually parodied Michael Johns singing Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport. The judges gave rave reviews. 😀
Interesting didn’t know that either and I’m a pop music encyclopedia. Perhaps John can cover The Mighty Quinn next!
Firstly, excellent piece of trivia. Secondly, Guy Sebastian did it much better on S1 of AI
Wow, I didnt know that :p And it always has been considered some sort of unofficial Aussie Anthem, then again I have no idea what people outside of Australia thought of it.
You think this will spark another farewell tour from Johnny now? He could make it a farewell trilogy!!
Trivia: “You’re The Voice” is actually a British song, written by former Manfred Mann singer Chris Thompson (perhaps better known these days for his role in the recorded and stage show versions of Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds).
I interviewed Thompson when he was out here for WoTW last year, and he seemed quite amused that the song’s been adopted as a kind of de facto Australian anthem. Because it’s actually a song about nuclear disarmament, written when he slept in one morning and missed a disarmament protest march.
When he first heard that Farnham was planning on covering the song he said his reaction was “no way is the guy who did Sadie The Cleaning Lady recording my song!” However since the royalties started rolling in he has somewhat changed his mind 🙂
And now, back to your normal programming 🙂
Not to bad aye!!
Although I cant stand the Karaoke Reality Series, you have to give credit where credit is due, the dude can sing!
lol@ watching them try to figure it out, fills you heart with Aussie pride lol
Now if we can only get one of them to sing Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport….
