Seven promises evidence on Corby drugs
The Seven Network will present evidence to show Mercedes Corby and her brother were involved in the “vile” drug trade, a jury has been told.
Tom Hughes QC, for Seven, said the evidence would also show Mercedes Corby lied to the public by denying either she or her family had any involvement with drugs.
Addressing the NSW Supreme Court jury hearing a defamation case brought by Mercedes Corby, he said her former friend Jodie Power, and others, would be called to give evidence.
If the jurors accepted the evidence, they would find she lied to the public, he said on Wednesday.
“Because, not only was she, Mercedes Corby, involved in this vile trade - and it is vile - but also her brother Michael Corby,” he said.
“Michael Corby, Jodie Power will tell you, sold marijuana to Jodie Power on numerous occasions.”
Mr Hughes told the jury he would not engage in “colour, or in extravagant expressions”.
At one stage he told the jury his address was sounding “dreadfully dull” when compared to the “fireworks of yesterday”.
But he made no apology for this, saying this was a “very serious case and its resolution is not advanced by forensic fireworks”.
The hearing was disrupted when a woman shouted support for convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby from the public gallery of the courtroom. Justice Carolyn Simpson sent the jury away while the woman continued shouting until security arrived and she left the courtroom.
