Todd McKenney revived from overdose

Todd McKenney was found unconscious in a Sydney park on Friday afternoon after a drug overdose, and had to be revived by ambulance staff.

McKenney was found by members of the public at 3.30pm on Friday in Rushcutters Bay and an ambulance was called.

He was later charged with possessing GHB, known as the “date rape” drug.

But McKenney claims his drink was spiked, at a party he attended in Potts Point.

“I had a vodka and tonic, and I started to feel progressively sick,” he said.

“I have no idea where I ended up…..my drink was obviously spiked.”

McKenney said the incident was probably a case of ‘the tall poppy syndrome’. “They obviously wanted to put the boot into me. I don’t know what I have done to deserve this treatment,” he said. “I will rigorously defend any charges.”

McKenney did not work on his Sydney FM radio show that day because it was Anzac Day.

His radio co-host and Dancing with Stars colleague, Sonia Kruger had no idea what had happened to her friend and colleague. “I haven’t spoken to Todd all weekend,” she said. “I just cannot believe it but I don’t want to make any further comment until I find out exactly what happened. It seems very unlikely to me.”

McKenney said there was a lot of people at the party that he did not know and believes it was “all a set-up”.

“I would hate to lose my job over this because it is so unfair,” he said.

On April 7, he was banned from driving for three months and fined $375 after pleading guilty to drink-driving. He was breath-tested and blew 0.05. He is expected to face court on May 16.

NB: As McKenney has been charged all comments for this post are withheld.
