Another of the excellent locally-produced docos from Crime Investigation Australia is coming, this time revisiting the 1980s murder of a New South Wales’ teenager in Headless Body – The Kim Barry Story.

In 1981, the body of a young teenage girl was found dumped in bushland beneath a mountain lookout near Wollongong, south of Sydney. The head and fingers had been removed to prevent identification and the girl’s own bra and blouse had been used to tie her hands and feet.

The Steve Liebmann-hosted series will feature interviews with chief investigator, Keith Smith, the case’s leading senior detectives and Kim’s father, Brian Barry.

The world premiere episode will screen at 7:30pm May 29 on Crime & Investigation Channel.

No motive has ever been established for the killing and the convicted killer local miner, Graham Potter, who was released in 1996 after serving 15 years, still proclaims his innocence.

Crime Investigation Australia, FOXTEL’s smash-hit crime series, will revisit the infamous 1980s murder of a New South Wales’ teenager in the world premiere of CIA: Headless Body – The Kim Barry Story, airing on Thursday, May 29 at 7:30pm AEST.

Hosted by Steve Liebmann, this extraordinary episode looks back at how a determined team of crack detectives used ground-breaking forensic techniques to solve one of New South Wales’ most baffling murder cases.

This episode features detailed re-enactments and interviews with key figures from the case; including chief investigator, Keith Smith, the case’s leading senior detectives as well as an intimate interview with Kim’s father, Brian Barry.

In 1981, the body of a young teenage girl was found dumped in bushland beneath a mountain lookout near Wollongong, south of Sydney. The head and fingers had been removed to prevent identification and the girl’s own bra and blouse had been used to tie her hands and feet.

When the clothing was displayed on the evening news, the victim’s distraught mother recognised them and the body was soon identified as that of Kim Narelle Barry, a 19-year-old local shop assistant.

Kim’s head and fingers were later found in scrub some distance from the lookout. Damage to the skull showed she had been bludgeoned to death.

It was a classic murder mystery.

A national manhunt culminated in the arrest of local miner, Graham Potter.

Despite his protests of innocence, and claims that two thugs had actually killed her, Potter was convicted of Kim Barry’s murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
