Axed: Back To You

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that FOX has cancelled Back To You starring Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton in order to pick up the pilot The Inn.

This is very disappointing news for a show with promise that was disrupted by the writer’s strike.

It has been further complicated in Australia by Easter non-ratings and one hour Wednesday editions of Big Brother. It didn’t air this week, nor is it planned for next Wednesday. It returns May 21.

The show also re-cast the role of daughter Gracie and wrote out weather girl Montana.

Described as Upstairs/Downstairs set at a hip New York hotel, The Inn’s pilot is directed by Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), starring Niecy Nash, Jerry O’Connell, Molly Stanton, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jolene Purdy, Brando Eaton.

Maybe it’s time for a fan campaign for Back To You to be picked up by another network?

  1. Hi, just come across your page as I was looking for the listing for Back to You on More 4 in the UK. It’s not listed because they aren’t showing it anymore over here, we were on episode 12. We loved it over here, well as far as our friends go, not sure about the rest of the UK, but I guess not. I loved it and looked forward to watching it every week. I really hope that Fox or whoever make the program, change their minds and take it up again. I don’t think the powers that be have given it a chance…….

  2. Amen southpatt, Angel is my favourite TV series ever made. The 4th season of that show is epic with Faith returning, Connor’s development and best of all, Angelus creating havoc upon LA. The Beast was an awesome adversary for them as well, and Wesley kicked ass. Moonlight definitely isn’t in the same league as Angel, but its the closest thing we have to an Angel season 6 (not counting those comic book things).

And for the record, 2.5 Men isn’t the top sitcom, HIMYM has been ourating it every week this yr its been on. It usually pulls 1.1-1.2 million viewers a week, which is higher than 2.5 Men’s average of 1 mill. As far as “top sitcoms” go, HIMYM is the one on top right now in Aus.

The ratings in the states are below other CBS comedies like Rules of Engagement and 2.5 Men, but still higher than others like The Big Bang Theory and NBC comedies like 30 Rock and Scrubs. Additionally, 2.5 Men bombed in Aus for the last 5 years, Nine didn’t even bother airing past season 2 due to low ratings. Its only since its been given the 7pm weekday slot this yr that its gotten a somewhat stable following.

  3. Actually Two & A Half Men is our #1sitcom as it is in the states. HIMYM justly gets poor ratings in the states and average here.

  4. Since richotb brought it up.
HIMYM is our #1 top comedy 🙂
Moonlight – mehhh – The girls like it. But as vampire/private investigator shows go.. Angel was much better – sorry, off topic. Its all about the money. I read last night, that it was the production costs in front (and behind) the camera that sealed Back to you’s fate. This same production cost may be what gives moonlight another season because it is supposedly cheap to make.

  5. Such a shame as this show had real promise. Can’t new shows be given a chance to grow! If Seinfeld debuted this year it would have been axed as well as it performed poorly in it’s first few years. Stuff you Fox I hope The Inn flops it will serve you right.

  6. This is dumb. I really thought this show would last another 7 seasons. I truly thought this show would come back next year, I didn’t think for a moment it would be on the bubble. Now its been axed. It was getting great ratings here, 1 million viewers a week, which is a lot better than other new comedies like Samantha Who which was axed over here. It was rating well in the US too, higher than ‘Til Death anyway, yet that got renewed for season 3. Just goes to show FOX is off their rocker.

Fred Willard, Patricia Heaton, Frasier and the cynical Polish dude were awesome and had such great chemistry together. Too many shows on their network like Dark Angel, Tru Calling, Firefly, Family Guy and soooooo many others all get canceled before their time (although FG did later get picked up 3 years after its cancelation). Although the show has gotten worse since a fantastic first batch of episodes with the mistakes of recasting Gracie and writing out Montana, it was still one of the freshest sitcoms to come out since HIMYM 3 years ago. Oh well. As long as HIMYM and Moonlight get renewed I’m not complaining. I guess that Unhitched show has been put in the can too, I won’t bother giving that one a shot. I’ll be sure to give future FOX programming a miss though. House, Kitchen Nightmares and Bones are terrible and those are always quoted as the network’s best shows next to drivel like Idol and The Moment of Truth. Screw you FOX!!

  7. good call by fox I reckon, the show was going nowhere, in any other season without the writers strike disruption it may have gained some traction..and what the hell where they thinking writing out the weather girl, she was the funniest thing about the show!

  8. I feel just a *little* bad for Ten since Back To You was working fairly well for them. But the show’s concept clearly didn’t have much life in it so I’m not surprised at all that it got the axe.
