Axed: Moonlight, Shark.
Uh oh. This news won’t go down well with a lot of people.
Moonlight has been axed by CBS. The show starring Australia’s Alex O’Loughlin had quite a cult fan base, including many in the US who joined that crazy campaign of sending their own blood to the network (god knows how fans of Bones would top that).
Nine will have a few eps up its sleeve but don’t expect them to be slated.
James Woods’ Shark has also been put out of its misery -a show that never took hold in Oz.
Meanwhile there are renewals for New Adventures of Old Christine (WB), Rules of Engagement (Sony/CBS Paramount), How I Met Your Mother (20th Century Fox TV) and The Unit (20th Century Fox TV). Neil Patrick Harris and friends should really be thanking Britney….

I am very angry at the axing of MOONLIGHT! It was a very different and compelling show and Alex O’Laughlin was just beautiful. A far better show than all those endless and same old, same old CSI and hospital dramas that bore me to tears.
Jack!
this is the most devastating and shattering news, before yesterday i didn’t even think this was on the cards. moonlight was winning the ratings, it was winning awards and it already has a huge fan base. i’ve been emailing and signing petitions and filling out network feedback forms, anything i can, can’t really call being international i wouldn’t have the first clue about all the area codes i’d need to put in. how can they just cancel a show that is performing well, they will live to regret this if the CW picks it up which i am expecting they will because i am in such a state of denial that to think that they might not would just be too much to cope with. i really loathe CBS first jericho now this, so many shows that i do watch have been renewed by the networks, and all the axed ones i already new about but this one is such a shock, i would give up all those shows that were renewed if it would bring back moonlight, it is my number 1, the only show i go so far as to download because it is not airing here, this is an absolute nightmare.
With Jericho and Moonlight now getting the axe, CBS has absolutely NO good shows on its network. Well, that’s not totally true. HIMYM and NCIS are great. But come on. Look at their freakin’ lineup.
* The Amazing Race[14]
* The Big Bang Theory[15][14]
* Cold Case
* Criminal Minds[14]
* CSI: Crime Scene Investigation[14]
* CSI: Miami[14]
* CSI: NY[14]
* Ghost Whisperer[14]
* How I Met Your Mother
* NCIS[14]
* Numb3rs[14]
* The New Adventures of Old Christine
* Survivor: Gabon[16]
* Survivor 18[16]
* The Unit (more like an A-Team ripoff)
* Two and a Half Men[14]
* Without a Trace[14]
Cop show after cop show after cop show. Come to think of it, Moonlight was mostly just a cop show with a slight little tiny twist to it. The vampire element hardly surfaced at all towards the later episodes. It wasn’t a great show, and certainly not in the league of Angel, but it was still a nice change, especially when the sexy Caroline took to the screen. I’ve been prepared for this axing happening ever since Ausiello reported The Unit would be taking over the Friday 9pm shift in America. But whatever. I’m over it. Next season I won’t be watching any new shows at all (excluding Dollhouse and possibly The Philanthropist) as there’s no point if they’re just going to be axed. I’ll wait til a second season has been announced, or at least a full season order. 8 million viewers is a lot of people to piss off.
I’m pretty sure this show would have done better on another network. Look at what LOST did for ABC and what Heroes did for NBC. But then again, this show is more in the league of Invasion and The Nine than LOST and Heroes. At least Shark was axed. Horrible, horrible show. Generic, mundane television at its finest.
I think that the axing of Moonlight is a tragedy. The show had such potential and it did so well considering its beginnings, CBS did not give it a good enough go all things considered.
Seriously tragic considering the other repetitive rubbish that is on TV at the moment.
what do you mean “fans of bones would top that”?
cheers.
Get Over It! such is the life of TV shows, it is expensive to make and if the show doesn’t rate or doesn’t get the figures the network or studio want, then there is not much point in continuing on with it.
Moonlight only had average figures(this is why nine removed it from there schedule a few months back)in Australia, It must of been similar in the US.
Moonlight is gone(I thought it was rubbish actually),I am sure there will be something else to replace it program wise next year.
Fans of Vampires send their blood, fans of bones would send errrr….
moonlight was not taken off nine due to poor ratings, it was the fact that they schduled it as a “non-ratings period show” and the ratings period simply resumed. and in america it won it’s timeslot and got the demographics CBS wanted and helped them win the night. if it was getting bad ratings people wouldn’t be as surprised as we are, the fact is the cancellation makes no sense the show was performing well and CBS gave indications that it was going to get a 2nd season, then out of the blue it’s gone. sounds like there may have been some creative differences going on behind the scenes so the network got rid of them for reasons other than the obviousness of ratings.
the CW to the rescue! (fingers crossed)
Geez.. tragic? devastating? shattering? get a grip! The earthquake in China is a tragedy the axing of Moonlight is not! It’s just a tv show you’ll live.
Personally I didn’t watch it so don’t care and I’m more annoyed about the axing of Shark which actually was rating well.
I do agree with Richo on one point though about waiting until a show perhaps gets a second season before bothering. I got into Womens Murder Club and now pfft gonski. Annoying.
Bindi, if it was extremely popular during non-ratings period and took the country by storm, it would have stayed. It didn’t.
The states the same.
It doesn’t make sense to the fans naturally, but it makes perfect sense to the network, no bling… then flingĀ©
