Cannes flicks screening on ABC2

During May ABC2 is screening its own Cannes Film Festival showcase.

So far it has screened and To Kill a Mockingbird and The Go Between.

This Saturday Jack Nicholson stars in The Last Detail (1974) and on Saturday May 24 it’s one of Steven Spielberg’s rarely-seen early films The Sugarland Express (1974, pictured). Goldie Hawn stars in this excellent true-life road movie about a woman who took a Texas cop hostage in a bid to keep from losing her son. The aerial shots of dozens of cop cars following her across Texas are hilarious. It’s another example of Spielberg having made some of his best flicks early in his career.

Taxi Driver (1976) starring Robert de Niro will screen on May 31 at 8:30pm.

Film buffs can also check out Film Festival Project featuring Sundance, Tribeca and Cannes at 8:30pm Wednesday May 14, 21 and 28

  1. No doubt Taxi Driver will see some significant censorship cuts when broadcast that early; the film is rated R on video.

Good to see ABC2 screening these films, as well as their series of older cult films from a few weeks ago; you’d expect them in late night slots on the other networks… if they were shown at all in the first place.
