Adelaide’s film and television industry is to get a $43 million state-of-the-art studio in 2010.
Premier Mike Rann announced the project during a visit to Los Angeles which included meetings with Hollywood film industry executives.
He said the Adelaide Film and Screen Hub, including two sound stages, production and post-production facilities and a screening theatre, would put the future of film production in South Australia beyond doubt.
“It will be a clearly visible demonstration of our commitment and ongoing support nationally and internationally for the future viability of the industry,” Mr Rann said in a statement.
“There has been a resurgence in feature film production in South Australia in recent years as well as strong growth in post production and digital effects activity with South Australian creative talent making significant contributions to blockbusters such as the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Superman Returns.”
Mr Rann said the film and television industry in SA contributed about $28 million annually to the local economy and employed about 100 people.
“In the past four years, 26 feature films have been made in SA,” he said.
Construction of the new film and screen facilities will start in 2009 and should be completed the following year.
