  1. I have to ask. Has Lost dipped below 1/2 a million yet? Trinny lost alot of viewers this week so this might have a flow-on effect for Lost?

  2. I think what trendy is trying to say is that, like me, lead ins don’t do much for our tv watching. I plan which shows i watch, (and more often than not tape them). It has been proven that lead-ins work, cause many people switch on the tv and have no idea what they want to watch, and frankly, don’t care (which might explain why big brother is still on tv). And did anybody notice that when criminal intent was on after big brother, it usually started like 20 minutes later, but now that rove (a live show) is on after, the delay is like 5 minutes….

  3. 1m in Oz was pretty tepid last week, #53 for the week.

In the US its about 8m which is competitive for the timeslot. Sits about #25th overall.

  4. “Whatever you have thought of, someones been there and done it to death”
WTF? We’d still all be living in caves if people believed that…
Oh, someone else has probably invented a wheel, so I won’t bother. LOL

  5. Thanks for keeping us up to speed on the ratings race.I was just wondering how the breakfast shows are doing? Im rather sick of the mel and kochie clan so ive switched back to the Today show.

  6. Trendy, a much wiser man than me once told me
“Whatever you have thought of, someones been there and done it to death”
Hence the scientific/statistical evidence. You also said that ratings are taken even if you leave your TV on an your not in the room, what about demographic? What about if a house has two TV sets?
All this has been talked about, researched and findings concluded.
Some lead ins work, some don’t.
Personally? I think Rove is getting a little dull, ain’t got crap to do with lead ins 🙂

  7. Even if ratings were statistically valid (the sample size is way too small to say that it is, similar to polls around the election ans they are rarely accurate). There isn’t enough actual evidence (not that i have have seen anyway) to prove lead ins do anything, the evidence at best is specious and anecdotal.

With a sample size of 5,000 (3,000 metro and 2000 regional) for a population of nearly 21million, that is 0.02% (1 person per 4,200 people) sample size. I really don’t think that you can capture enough sub groups with such a small sample size especially when viewing habbits can vary dramatically in a household alone.

For me to have any faith in ratings numbers the sample size would have to be increased by 10 to 100 times

What is even scarier than our ratings sample size percentage is that ours is the highest in the world (UK has 5,000 samples for 61million, though not everyone has a TV license so its a tiny bit better than 5K/63M.)

I suppose we will have to agree to disagree though.

  8. what did big brothers big mouth get? was it even worse than last week, i hope so. maybe if the ratings for it get heaps worse than what supernatural was pulling they’ll show us the last 4 episodes.

  9. Perhaps its people that like a stupid guessing game that requires no intelligence to play like Ch7 news more than Ch9 news, and people that like to watch something interesting like antiques prefer 9 news over 7.

When it comes to news it may possibly have influence because the news programs are virtually the same on both stations. But for a normal TV series, where your supposed to watch every episode in sequence your either going to watch it or tape it.

There is no reason to think that just cause ACA did better that was the reason 2.5men did better, the most logical explanation is more people were bored and were watching TV (and youd have to be pretty darn bored to watch ACA or TT).

  10. Trendy, lead in has a significant bearing. Of course it is not the only reason for if a show rates or doesn’t rate but for example if you look at the news, Deal has made 7’s news ratings very high and in the markets where Antiques wins over deals, Melbourne especially, Nine News rates higher there.

Also, look at Two and A Half Men, it usually does 900, last night it did 1.2 on the back of a stronger ACA which did 1.3.

  11. Some people may be influenced by the the previous show, but i cant believe it would be close to a significant amount of people.

That example i gave proves nothing, if i leave my tv on, not paying attention to anything its saying, with my back to it, it doesn’t count as me watching it because i am not, im just to lazy to get the remote that is just out of arms reach (and it only happens once in a blue moon).

I don’t see how the majority of viewers would watch a show just because its on after something they were watching.

I did forget 2 circumstances it may have some bearing.
    1) I was going to watch it anyway
    or
    2) There are 2 things that i was going to watch at the same time and one show follows another i watch so i tape the other channel (not always though if i like the other show more or if the show i am watching goes overtime i will tape the end of the current show and the following show and watch the other channel). But thankfully this is rare.

I know I’m a bit of a power user when it comes to TV and will follow shows i like to whatever time slot they are crammed into (as long as its pre-midnight). I read the TV guide every day and decide what i will watch (ie shows i like that are on that night), if its new i will read the summary, google the show, see if its worth watching. I can’t recall ever watching something because it was on after something i was watching without deciding to do so earlier on the shows own merits.

Maybe my problem is i just don’t understand what goes on in the heads of people that have the ratings boxes, hopefully the freeview boxes and tivo whichever comes out, whenever they come out will have ratings built into them so that we will for once get a remotely accurate ratings system and not a tiny subsection.

It just doesn’t make any sense to not watch a show that you want to watch because the show on before it sucks or vice versa.

I guess there is always the chance that i am the odd one out.

Basically what i am saying is just because the show on before it sucks, doesn’t mean that is the reason the show after it gets bad ratings.

  12. Trendy, a lead-in show definetly has some impact. It’s been proven time and again here in Oz and you see it all the time in the U.S.A too. The example you’ve given just proves the fact that the lead-in show WILL effect the subsequent show’s ratings!

  13. I wish people would stop blaming lead in for a shows ratings, i doubt it has any major impact.

I plan my nights TV in advance (and have done since i started watching TV when i was a kid), the only time lead in makes any diff is like last night, i was watching Boston Legal and then left the TV on after it, so the following show was on in the background though i wasn’t watching it (and i switched over to my Buffy DVDs that I’ve seen a dozen times after 30mins anyway).

I for one stopped watching rove this year cause I’m just sick of it, just like big brother. Some shows have a limited shelf life, and they are both past theirs, Friday night games is the only thing remotely worth watching from BB, and that’s because i am nostalgic for It’s a knockout.

  14. Rove’s numbers fell duw to the weaker BB lead in…i know a few people didnt watch Rove last night cuz they didnt watch BB

BB was actually much more intresting last night, but im a bit of a fan anyway…sum changes worked, others sucked…Kyle & Jackie are doing a much better job than Gretal – they show real opinion and interest, and give the show a more comfy feel

  15. Does anyone know what’s causing the downslope with Rove? Is it the fact that it’s starting at 9pm, the fact that it follows BB, or just that people are sick of it? It hasn’t changed much from last year so don’t see how it could be the latter.
