Returning: Canal Road

Failed Aussie drama (there really isn’t any other way to put it) Canal Road will be resuming its episodes on Nine, after being bumped then rested by the network.

It returns from 10:30pm Wednesday May 28.

This week it isn’t on air due to the movie Hitch ending at 10:55pm. Next week there is a State of Origin match from 7:30 -10pm.

Nine has also slated repeats of the first four episodes screening on Monday afternoons at 1pm in a bid to lift the audience for the show. Nine will benefit from local quota points by airing a first run drama, although it has a strong slate of Aussie drama this year with Underbelly, Sea Patrol, McLeod’s Daughters, The Strip and Strike Team plus childrens’ dramas.

  1. Actually there is “another way to put it” ‘hopelessly unsupported Aussie drama’.

Canal Road was not the best written or produced show on Aussie TV, but it is certainly better viewing than many overseas productions that have rated much better.

However, by giving it a 9:30 starting timeslot, and only two episodes to capture an audience, Channel 9 has virtually wasted the show.

“Panic programming” is the term others have used for 9’s recent behaviour, but there is an older more accurate term ‘incompetence’.

  2. Jack, glad that someone actually like the show, but the reality is that it’s absolutely dreadful, and for once the viewing audience got that right.

The only thing about Canal Road with even a hint of quality is the opening title sequence.

I’m willing to go out on a limb right now and be the first to predict the total failure of next year’s “Young Doctors” remake. Unless they actually spend a bit of money on it and hire good talent behind the camera and actually shoot the thing on film, or at least on HD video with lighting and set design done by people who don’t make everything look like a tacky cardboard daytime soap.

  3. I must admit I really enjoyed the third and fourth episode of canal Raod. We just needed time to get used to the many characters. I love Diana Glen in this. She must be a really good actress, because I really disliked her character in Secret Life of Us.
This show is far more interesting than Patrol Boat. Woops slip, that show was on the abc in 80s. I mean Sea Patrol, which may as well have been written in 80s.

  4. This is acually a good show … it has suffered in the hands of NINE as do most dramas (except Sea Patrol and McLeod’s Daughters) … it really deserves to be given time to find it’d audience!
    Jack!
