Burn, Hollywood, burn

A fire on the backlot of Universal Studios has destroyed film locations including the studio’s “New York Street” and the “Back to the Future” courthouse square.

It also blazed a King Kong amusement park attraction , a video vault storage facility and locations used in Ghost Whisperer.

But a representative for Universal said it could have been much worse.

“Only three to four acres burned,” they said. “There are plenty of other locations.”

Despite more than 40,000 films and TV shows stored in the video vault the studio has “lots of duplicates” elsewhere.

Ghost Whisperer was already on hiatus until mid-June and the studio has said it will find other locations to use when shooting resumed.

Universal went ahead with its MTV Awards event on Sunday, and will re-open the gates to its theme park.

  1. I hope nobody was killed otherwise Ghost Whisperer Jennifer Love Hewitt will have a lot of visits upon return to the backlot.

PS. I can’t stand how they advertise Ghost Whisperer here in Melbourne, they talk as if Jennifer Love Hewitt is playing herself, have you ever noticed that?

  2. You know, I was just at Universal Studios in October last year and I don’t remember seeing the Back To The Future set at all. Yes, it’s bad to loose it, but yeah, I’m pretty sure tourists who visit don’t get to see it anyway?

  3. I’m sure they can be rebuilt but they won’t be the same. A new NY street set won’t be the same as the one used in Dirty Harry:(

  4. What a tragedy I will be visiting there in august so I really hope that it has been rebuilt by then one thing that they do have on their side is that it they could have lost a lot more

  5. I was planning on visiting there in July 2009..so they better have it all fixed up by then. They said all things that burnt were replaceable but I heard that the ‘Lucy’ section burnt down too???…how are those items replaceable?
