Call for kids channels

Another push today for the ABC to have a dedicated children’s channel, in a parliamentary report from the upper house’s environment, communications and arts committee.

In its final report, the committee said it believed the inappropriate sexualisation of children in Australia was of increasing concern. Dedicated children’s free-to-air television channels should be established to help protect young people from sexualising material, the committee recommended.

“While noting the complexity of defining clear boundaries around this issue, the committee believes that preventing the premature sexualisation of children is a significant cultural challenge,” the report said.

“This is a community responsibility which demands action by society. “In particular, the onus is on broadcasters, publishers, advertisers, retailers and manufacturers to take account of these community concerns.”

The report recommends broadcasters, specifically the ABC, consider establishing dedicated children’s television channels.

Yesterday the BBC announced its kids channel CBeebies would be coming to Australia.
