ABC ups internet downloads

By David Knox on July 8, 2008 / Filed Under News 4

The ABC’s Kim Dalton has joined in the TiVo / IQ2 debate predicting additional free-to-air digital channels will reduce the appeal of subscription TV.

With the introduction of extra channels next year, he said, “people will increasingly be presented with a very strong alternative, and they’ll be thinking, ‘I don’t need to spend the money on pay TV.’

“I just think that take-up [of pay TV] is levelling off.”

Mr Dalton said Seven’s $699 TiVo recorder and digital set-top box would remain a “relatively niche product”.

Meanwhile the ABC intensified its internet push yesterday, adding a service to its online shop that lets customers buy or rent 250 hours of its programs by downloading them to their Windows-equipped computers.

I pay tax>>>tax pays (VERY LITTLE TO THE) ABC>>>ABC makes (HUGE AMOUNTS OF RADIO &) TV with my (VERY LITTLE AMOUNT OF) money>>>ABC sells (AND FREELY OFFERS) shows back to me , then takes them back off me after 7 days. (WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENT TO BUYING A DVD OR VHS FROM THE ABC.. WHICH THEY’VE BEEN DOING FOR YONKERS)

Honestly, im not wild about the PC streaming thing either, but you gotta give them props for offering the content to as wide an audience as possible.

dude – sure you can rent sleek geeks for PC only… BUT you can also buy it from itunes (mac & pc) or download new episodes for FREE as a vodcast. they’re just widening ways people can access the content.

So now I can rent an episode for sleek geeks for $3 a week, but only on a PC? What a bloody load of crap that is. I’d expect this from Channel 9 on ninemsn.

I pay tax>>>tax pays ABC>>>ABC makes TV with my money>>>ABC sells shows back to me, then takes them back off me after 7 days. OK, thanks ABC.
