Freeview confirmed for 2009

NOTE: There are now later posts on the state of play for Freeview than this story, please refer via search function or News posts.

Freeview will launch in Australian in 2009.

The ABC, SBS, the Seven Network, the Nine Network, Network TEN, Prime, WIN and Southern Cross have joined forces to deliver the free-to-air digital television platform. The media companies will comprise a new not-for-profit organisation, chaired by the ABC’s Kim Dalton.

Freeview will offer 15 television channels from free-to-air broadcasters on digital platforms, including new channels from the big three commercial networks. It will not include subscription TV.

Freeview operates in the UK with an EPG at no cost to viewers, with no satellite dish, no subscription, no ties, no contracts, and no installation costs.

Press Release:
Australia’s free-to-air commercial television networks together with the nation’s public broadcasters today formally announced the establishment of Freeview.

The consortium has been formed to help drive take-up of the free-to-air digital television platform in Australia.

Freeview shareholders include the ABC, SBS, the Seven Network, the Nine Network, Network Ten, Prime, WIN and Southern Cross. The ABC’s Director of Television, Kim Dalton, will Chair the not-for-profit organisation.

Mr Kim Dalton says Freeview will work to ensure all Australians continue to enjoy the great range of programming offered by free-to-air broadcasters as the nation transitions from the analogue to the digital platform.

“This is an extraordinary step forward for the free-to-air broadcasters. Together we have pioneered digital television in Australia, investing millions in infrastructure and converting our equipment and studios accordingly. Now it’s time for Australians to reap the rewards; Freeview will offer viewers more channels, great content and the very best quality picture and sound,” Mr Dalton said.

From next year, Government legislation will allow the commercial free-to-air networks to broadcast an additional standard definition (SD) channel each, in addition to their primary SD channels, and their recently added high definition (HD) channels. The three new channels, together with the two ABC and two SBS channels and their respective HD channels, will bring to 15 the suite of channels to be marketed under the Freeview umbrella.

To receive all the Freeview channels, consumers will need an HD digital-set-top box, digital video recorder or an integrated digital television.

Freeview will be launching an awareness campaign in the coming months to ensure consumers are ready for when the full suite of 15 Freeview channels are available next year.

Ahead of the launch, Freeview is working with manufacturers to ensure appropriate technical standards are met on all television or digital set-top-box equipment that will carry the Freeview badge.

Freeview will work closely with all relevant areas of Government to ensure consistent messaging.

This may be a stupid question and is sorta answered in the press release, but will my current PVR (Topfield TF4400T) work? I understand it wont display any of the new HD cannels, but it doesnt have the freeview branding…

  2. Leith on July 16th, 2008 5:30 pm

I’m confused as to how this new system is different to what we have now. Is it just an umbrella term for all the stations which aren’t on subscription tv?

  3. Martin on July 16th, 2008 5:57 pm

Am I better off waiting for a Freeview PVR to come out next year or get a Tivo. They have Freeview PVRs in the UK….

  4. bassborg on July 16th, 2008 6:13 pm

Yes, Freeview is just a branding for the existing and future free to air digital channels, which they will use as a marketing tool.

Alex - your Toppy will be fine, they aren’t actually changing anything. They say you’ll need an HD box for Freeview but that is only to get all 15 channels including the HD ones, as opposed to the SD ones only on your 4400.

  5. Cameron on July 16th, 2008 6:31 pm

Ugly logo, almost as bad as TiVo’s logo.

The UK freeview logo is better (slightly)…

  6. Alex on July 16th, 2008 6:47 pm

Thanks bassborg! I didn’t want to fork out more money, I have only had my topfield pvr for 6 months!

  7. Chris on July 16th, 2008 7:21 pm

The only way I see Freeview being of benefit to consumers is if they include a complete EIT EPG for all channels on each MUX (ie program info for all channels is available without needing to change to each channel first).

Otherwise, it will be nothing more than a fluff marketing exercise that will likely result in freeview branded devices being crippled of features currently enjoyed by many DTV/PVR users.

  8. Alex on July 16th, 2008 9:16 pm

I am always hearing of people complaining about not having EPG guides. For Seven, Nine, Ten, there is a 7 day guide and ABC, a 2 day guide. SBS has only now and next (doesnt worry me, dont watch any sbs programs). I dont have ice i dont upload the epg data. what is so wrong with the current system!

  9. Chris on July 16th, 2008 10:25 pm

Alex, the 7-day EPG’s are a very recent development and a vast improvement on the rubbish now/next info that was provided for the previous seven or so years of DTV.

What lets it down atm is that you can only receive the EPG data for the current channel you are tuned to. So if you’re watching a program on ABC and you want to see what is showing later on 10 you have to change to 10 now, then wait for the program data to update before returning to what you were watching. The appeal of a complete EPG is having program info for all channels available at the click of a button.

This is a major feature of Freeview UK (I assume NZ also). The question remains whether our FTA networks can cooperate long enough to implement such an “advanced” system.

  10. Thomas on July 16th, 2008 11:40 pm

Someone please correct me on my maths.

    The channels will be:

    1- ABC1
    2- ABC2
    3- TEN
    4- TEN (2)
    5- TEN HD
    6- NINE
    7- NINE (2)
    8- NINE HD
    9- SEVEN
    10- SEVEN (2)
    11- SEVEN HD
    12- SBS
    13- SBS 2

Where am I missing the other 2 channels ?

  11. Jack on July 16th, 2008 11:51 pm

Pretty ridiculous logo. They should make the I look like a transmitter or something, not a Christmas tree with a star on top.

  12. fangerA101 on July 17th, 2008 7:10 am

ABC3 and SBS HD, I think thomo!

  13. Alex on July 17th, 2008 8:07 am

oh! THanks Chris! I have only had my PVR Since January, never experienced the old system. I dont watch live tv, so I don’t have to change to see what is on an other channel. I see the problem, the epg u want is like foxtels epg?

  14. Darren on July 17th, 2008 8:31 am

    I think Thomas there is:
    14 - ABC HD
    15 - SBS HD

    ??????

  15. DeXtA on July 17th, 2008 8:56 am

    @Thomas

    ABC HD
    SBS HD

  16. Chris on July 17th, 2008 7:42 pm

    @ Alex
Yeah an EPG like foxtels. That would have saved a lot of typing.

  17. Alex on July 17th, 2008 9:20 pm

    yea lol.

  18. Tassiegal on July 17th, 2008 11:01 pm

And whats the bet us Regionals wont benefit?

  19. PT Ryan on July 18th, 2008 8:47 am

Frankly, this press release is kind confusing. Doesn’t say if its a set-top box, PVR, or just some broadcast initative.

  20. Jason on October 7th, 2008 11:09 am

What about ABC3 which was going to be a kids channel.
This Digital TV gets worse every year and the EPG sucks in Canberra, takes ages to load and is always out by a few minutes so it starts recording early and it stops recording to soon.

  21. Paul on October 28th, 2008 6:03 pm

I’m glad they aren’t releasing ABC3, a full kids channel would just be a repeat of the existing ABC2’s day time programming, from like 9am to 6pm each weekday they only broadcast kids programs, so anyone complaining should just switch to abc2.
Any more kids programs and i’d go insane.

  22. danny on November 24th, 2008 7:30 pm

I have had the 7 day EPG for ages will that mean that I wont have to get a new set top box to view the freeview channels

  23. James on November 24th, 2008 8:39 pm

    wow…..big f-ing deal

  24. Rose on November 24th, 2008 9:43 pm

I bought my plasma tv in late 2006 and I read somewhere that we could record programs with freeview but will I need to purchase a digital recorder? Sorry if this sounds stupid but I hope someone can explain this to me

  25. David on November 24th, 2008 10:30 pm

Once again, don’t beleive the hype. Tivo, has failed on all accounts here in Oz.

The USA Tivo has 305 channels , including Showtime 1 & 2 MTV, VH1, Disney , TNT. We pay up to $100.00 per month for foxtel channels. The USA get in for around $10.00 US per month..Tivo Hd Recievers start at $149.00

Australia is always the last country to reciece technology, and we pay the high price.. The facts are, we are about 10 years behind the rest of the world. and the powers that be want to get every dollar out of us while they can before we realise we are getting screwed.. If the rest of the world can get Foxtel and 305 channels of entertainment for $10.00 per month why can’t we..?

All they are going to do, is broadcast on the other digital channels that were added over the last couple of years. Ex : ch 1 -ch 7 2- ch 7 3 & 7 hd.. At the end of the day.. there will be 4 channel 7 stations playing different content….

  26. james on November 25th, 2008 1:51 am

we jus bought a tivo on saturday now this free view comes to light. What will be better shall i take tivo back. Will freeview epg be live unlike tivos only updated daily? Cheers

just would like to know of the availability of these new digital chanels, for example at the moment where i live we have no access to current HD channels that are available to people in the city metro areas.will country areas be an acception, or is that up to our current TV station provider.any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    signed not getting hopes up

  29. Jason on November 26th, 2008 10:48 am

15 new channels so that is 3 for each network, TEN is releasing a new sports channel called ONE HD in 2009 so that is one of there 3 extra channels I assume.

The current EPG works fine and there is no need to change it, SBS do how ever need to get there act together and provide a 7 day guide.

Prime need to loose there 3 prime view channels which are all the same as the main Prime channel and are just a waste.

It is good that we don’t need to upgrade our gear.

  30. Sam on November 27th, 2008 10:39 am

Will there be any music channels?

  31. Sharon on November 27th, 2008 1:34 pm

These channels aren’t going to make much of a difference to what we already have on HD tuner so it’s not something really ‘new’.. Looks like only 2 ‘new’ channels.

I love that the kids can get ABC Kids. Yes.. alot of the channels are similar, though at different times, different programs are on. Just have to look. We don’t have to pay for a TV license over here as they have to in the UK so I think it’s fair that they get more channels.

  32. Paul S on November 27th, 2008 3:11 pm

Will any of these new 15 channels have live horseracing daily like SkyRacing. I currently have Select Tv, and thats the only channel I watch.

    Paul

  33. David Knox on November 27th, 2008 3:29 pm

One HD has sports but it won’t be like Sky Racing.

  34. graham nutter on November 27th, 2008 8:23 pm

hello anyone,I love digital TV but need some answers too.
Well if there is something to be done is fix the pixel flickering and the audio to picture tuning for most people with analogue. It is a kick in the pants for technology as even plasma and LCD have the same problem unless you move so far back from the tv to ignore it.Well unless you have over sized your set so it takes the majority of the wall as the movies.Still looks like a Japanese movie and puts you off.Are there going to be safe guards not to loose reception during light storms or just windy gusty days which reek havov with set top boxs and inbuilt tuners as they are easily spiked. The other thing is nearly every one needs to get a Digital antenna and not have a fm/uhf diplexer as they allow ghosting and rust out after 3 yrs.
Anyhow pleased to hear any help on my Qs dude happy viewing for every one.

  35. DFC on November 28th, 2008 12:56 am

    Yipee!
More channels to have endless repeats and bad programing on!!
I hope the two or three new channels will have the same ethics, and promise new episodes and then not really deliver them.. I love hanging on by a thread for things the rest of the world has already seen.
Ahh it’s good to be handed a few crumbs and forget that the rest of the world is eating steak sandwiches..

  36. Hugh on November 28th, 2008 8:32 am

It seems to me that all these extra channels are not new.
Remembering back to when digital TV was first switched on we had 3 ABC channels. ABC (local), ABC Fly & ABC kids, other channels broadcast multiview on their extra channels from time to time. That lasted for a short while then they all reverted to a single channel each. One step forward, two steps backs???
Digital can cause as many problems as it resolves. Just ask people who have recently purchaed digital TV’s only to find they cannot receive certain channels, or pixelation of channels because of parameter setting in their TV firmware.

  37. Mark midlands on November 29th, 2008 4:33 am

Why does freeview have so many un used channels ie smiletv when smiletv2 sells sex cant you put some thing better on and not that which cons people out of money. Also more film channels. Less chat channels ie rabbit its another rip off channel. More channels would be better and not selling channels.

  38. David Knox on November 29th, 2008 9:39 am

Mark Freeview in your UK is different to us here in Oz!

  39. James Jardine on November 29th, 2008 6:18 pm

I live in an area which has a lot of ironstone and granite outcrops which make terrestial antenna’s almost useless. Will this new system be availabke on Satelite?

  40. John the non believer on December 1st, 2008 12:13 am

What’s the bet that after a trial period only freeview badged (or enabled) PVR/DVR
will work with the 7 day EPG.And what’s the bet that these PVR/DVR will be
doctored up so that skipping ad breaks will be a thing of the past. Also recording
to the Hard Drive with some kind of copy protection will be the go.Check out
the UK or NZ freeview service and you will see the smoke and mirrors the
Australian Networks are playing at eg Do people in rural Australia really believe
they will getting 15 free channels with this gimmick.

  41. bicckybabe on December 1st, 2008 7:21 pm

whats the bet we dont get it here in portland, vic. we dont even have digital tele , even though all the towns around us do. portland is hopless. when are we going to catch up to the rest of the state, let alone the world. !

  42. Mark on December 2nd, 2008 5:25 pm

Will regional viewers in Albury Wodonga get free view? Will people lviing in border towns be able to get programs form the capital city of their state? I live in Albury and only get Sydney news when there’s a state or federal elction. Otherwise we are bombarded with tripe from Melbourne. Even our fuel, grocceriesetc. all come from Melbourne!

  43. Dan on December 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm

Anyone know if these extra will be shown through the foxtel box as the current free to air channels are? I cant find anything anywhere.

    Thanks in advance

  44. Kate on December 3rd, 2008 8:44 pm

It all sounded great but from what I can see it seems it’s what we are getting now,the HD channels now mostly show the same as digital anyway ,so are the new channels going to have new programming or is it all just hype?????? Kate

  45. David Knox on December 3rd, 2008 9:00 pm

The cynic in me is inclined to say hype. ABC2 has some good stuff. ONE HD promises 24 / 7 sport. Seven and Nine are yet to indicate the direction of their new digital channels.

There are later posts on the state of play for Freeview, please refer via search function or News posts.

  46. Barry on December 3rd, 2008 9:30 pm

I am disagreeing with Mark above. I live in Wodonga. Our local TV stations here although situated in Albury actually hold Victorian licences. Only the evening news is from Melbourne. All the late news, the Current Affairs shows, and the Morning Shows all come out of Sydney. Even the Pay TV News is from Sydney. He has not got a lot to complain about.

  47. Beth on December 4th, 2008 9:16 am

Can anyone tell me if there would be any advantage in having a tivo over a high deffinition box that records?

  48. Davout on December 4th, 2008 11:15 am

Freeview, what a joke. Is “Free to Air” free, you buy a TV, you buy a Digital Set Top Box, you pay for you electricity and you are bombarded with ads selling something. The channel programmers are unable to make a decision on a programmes time slot that lasts more than 24 hours, endless repeats (even of a good show, displays disrespect of the viewers). They start the new season of a show then take it off air after one episode and then bring back a month later saying it has been “fast tracked” for your viewing pleasure. Digital is a joke, a little wind or rain and the signal is lost.
I just see the extra channels as more of the same old, same old. There is no imagination used in this country by the networks, the programmers can not see past their own likes and dislikes and do not get me started on so called reality TV, what is real about it, you only see what the network wants you to see (heavy editing) and once a camera is involved how much do people act as themselves and not act up to the camera, the observer always affects the observed.

    Davout

Got something to say?
