Nine stands down Phil Gould
Channel Nine has stood down Phil Gould from the NRL Footy Show after he ambushed NRL CEO David Gallop in a radio interview last night.
A guest on Sydney’s Triple M’s coverage of Monday night football, Gallop was forced to raise his voice several times to be heard as Gould did his best to provoke the NRL chief. Gallop was subjected to the on-air attack for attempting to make Sonny Bill Williams honour his Bulldogs contract.
Nine’s David Gyngell reportedly spoke to Gould within hours of the interview telling him he would not be on.
The Footy Show boss Gary Burns confirmed to the Daily Telegraph that Gyngell had spoken to Gould and that he would not be appearing.
“We advertised that Phil Gould was going to be on the show but that is not happening now,” Burns said.
“I don’t know the reason why he is not on.
“David Gyngell has just told me that he is not on.
“I am sure David Gallop was not happy with the Triple M interview and this has happened after that.”
During the radio interview, Gould barked at Gallop, “When you speak you just repeat yourself every time.
“Please, please why has the sanctity of the contract suddenly raised its head? Why are you now trying to make an example of Sonny Bill Williams?” he said.
Gallop replied: “Let me go back to the point and answer you,” Gallop said. “The Bulldogs have not agreed to let him go. This is a very different situation and we need to keep contractual certainty.”
Gallop was due to appear on a new segment starting tomorrow night, of which Gould was to be the architect, designed to ask the “hard questions”. Gallop was now reluctant to appear after last night’s ambush.

AFL is lucky not to have any rival codes/overseas comps that poach their players like they do NRL. If there were they would be offered millions just as the NRL players are and would defect just as much.
I think it’s about TV rights and how much money is Nine paying NRL. I think people here don’t understand that Nine has offered AFL a lot more money that they had ever paid to NRL hence these players’ defections from NRL to RU. NRL cannot increase the salary cap without risking a bankruptcy for some clubs. There’s not enough money to keep the players so NRL is at the crossroads now. Should they demand more money for TV rights or merge with RU. I don’t think there’s any other possible solution.
