Two outspoken letters today appeared in the Media section of today’s Australian, criticising an item written by columnist Amanda Meade.
The letters by Seven’s Peter Meakin and CEO David Leckie were prompted by an article criticising Anna Coren’s coverage of an Olympic race by swimmer Alicia Coutts:
I have to acknowledge Amanda Meade’s efforts to turn vindictiveness into an Olympic event (“Animated resistance to the Games juggernaut,” Diary Aug 21).
I do not dispute her right to vent her feelings, however malicious and ill-founded, on any programme she chooses. But it has become abundantly clear that she cannot abide Anna Coren. In her column last week, she reported that swimmer Alicia Coutts’ mother couldn’t savour the moment because Coren was in her face during the 200 Meters Individual Medley.
For what it’s worth, Julie Coutts, Alicia’s mother, says you’re “evil” and Anna is “just the sweetest person”.
“I feel a special bond has developed and real friendship has arisen from your wonderful coverage of our story,” she told us.
I have always found Anna exceptionally attractive, with or without make-up. Anyone who criticises her on cosmetic grounds should first take a long look in a fortified mirror.
Peter Meakin.

It was followed by a brief letter from David Leckie:
I am writing in support of Peter Meakin’s letter to Amanda Meade and your newspaper regarding her continuing vindictive coverage of Today Tonight in general and Anna Coren in particular. I never complain but on this occasion I will.
