‘You’re gonna make it after all’

Here’s one for fans of nostalgic television: the reunion of the cast from The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

In the 1970s, it was a monumental sitcom, not merely for a brilliant cast who had precision comic timing, but for the fact it presented America with a modern, independent, career-driven, 30-something single woman trying to make it on her own. When ‘Mary Richards’ landed a job at WJM-TV, the lowest-rated news station in town, seven years of comedy unfolded.

Now all but one of the cast (Ted Knight died in 1986) reunites on The Oprah Winfrey Show, including Golden Girls‘ Betty White. Oprah, who was addicted to the show, even recreates two key sets for the special.

Mary Tyler Moore tells her the show was filmed on a lot that was also producing other classics of the time, such as The Bob Newhart Show. “From this small and neighborhood-like studio, [came] these little gems of shows that were well written and people who respected each other and who did their very best not to get the bucks, but to make a good show,” Mary says. “And then from our show, Cloris Leachman had her own show. Valerie Harper had her own show.

The reunion airs on Oprah at 1pm Tuesday August 19 on TEN.
