8am with Bill Woods?

TEN shoots a new-look morning news pilot with Bill Woods. Could it serve as a much-needed lead-in to 9AM with David & Kim?

Yesterday’s Age newspaper reported that TEN’s Bill Woods filmed a pilot on Friday for a new-look early morning News programme.

Woods currently hosts the one-hour Early News at 6am with Kathryn Robinson, which is followed by C classified programmes from 7-9am.

Could TEN be looking to move the programme to 8am as a stronger lead-in to 9am with David & Kim?

Viewers may well respond to a no-fuss news hour when its only real choices are the fluffier Sunrise and Today -but having comprehensive news sources, including reporters, would be critical to its success.

Last week 9AM was left out of the fight between The Morning Show and Mornings with Kerri-Anne. On Thursday Seven had 184,000, Nine had 177,000 and TEN just 73,000. A major reason for TEN’s soft numbers is the lack of a lead-in.

  1. This would be a welcome move. To have a decent quality morning news hour is a a good idea for FTA TV. ABC will soon have its own kids-only channel so that will cover all the ‘what about the kids’ crew. Really, before school kids shouldn’t be watching TV. They should sleep, get out of bed, have breakfast around the table with the olds, and then be off to school. If you’re drilling their heads with stuff to learn before school, they’re going to just get tired at school when they should be learning.

I agree that Sunrise and Today are for-the-ladies, with pretend news shows. 5 mins of repetitive news every half our, with max 5 stories which rarely change are a joke. The only alternatives are available on cable. A FTA breakfast timeslot would be welcome. I’d prefer 7am-8am though! The 6am news focus of these shows is too early for some, and not comprehensive either – built around economics mainly.

  2. Bring back GMA… But seriously, I think Ten should dump 9am for a 8-10am hard news/light entertainment program. Leaving 10 to 11 am free for P rated programming and (possibly) Neighbours reruns. As for Toasted TV, I could actually see it move to a live format (more resembling the old Saturday morning Hey Hey and Ten’s old hit, The Early Bird Show) from 6 to 8 in the morning. Having episodes taped in advance doesn’t work, unless it screens at 4 in the afternoon.

By the way, David do you know how Toasted TV rates in that slot against Sunrise and Today?

  3. i dunno – possibly a 2 hour show something along the lines of the 7:30 report perhaps? Back in europe, “euronews” fits in a wallop of news inside 30 minutes – i’d welcome a solid 2 hour news show different from the usual topics of today & sunrise. Dont get me wrong – im a fan of today (ducking for cover), but sometimes I’d love a 7:30 report type show as I’m having my brekkie before work.

  4. As Chris said, somebody should think of the children. Let them have their Toasted TV, it gives them something to wake up to before school. Another news show in the mornings would flop, Sunrise and Today already have it down well.

  5. Won’t somebody think of the children? There’s already too much adult content in the morning. When I were a lad I seem to remember most channels had cartoons?

  6. its going to take a lot more than a decent lead in to save David and Kim, Kim Watkins is lovely but David Reyne, is rude, arrogant and agressive, grumpy and possibly one of the worst choices of morning TV host ive ever seen.
