Can Superman save Smallville?

Smallville is to take a mid-season break in the US, fuelling speculation the writers are readying for cancellation.

It is into its eighth season but not even Superman could save Smallville if we are to believe the rumours swirling the CW production.

The series returns to air next week in the US, now without two key cast members in regular roles (Rosenbaum is out, Kreuk will merely guest star), but the show will be having a break after ten episodes.

It won’t return until the US Spring season -2009.

Partly, this lets the show run all of its spring episodes in a row, without interruption. And it’s insurance against a still-possible actors’ strike. But fans are speculating that it lets the producers turn the second half of the season into a fitting ending for the show, if it gets cancelled.

The ninth episode of the new series is reportedly a clip show -another sign the show is running out of super story ideas. In fact there are even fansites beginning to say the show is on its last legs.

If the CW network decides they want more Smallville, the writers can adjust their back half of the season instead of having to randomly end things without a decent send-off.

CW will put new Reaper in Smallville’s place in the interim.

Meanwhile no word if TEN is to fasttrack the eighth season here.

  2. Ch Ten should bring Smallville back to Ten SD.
IMO Season 8 is going to be pretty interesting with all the new characters.
Some of the prvious season focused to much on Lana. Plus Lex was getting a bit old.
It would be good to have 2 new villans – Doomsday and Tess
looking forward to Ep 11 – Legions of super heros

  3. Ali, Smallville has been airing on TEN HD exclusively for ages now on their Thursday Sci-Fi night.

Personally I reckon it should be finished this season. I tuned out because it was just getting too long and melodramatic.

  4. Craig it ended with Lex Luthor finding out Clark’s secret and him trapping Clark in the Fortress of Solitude (along with Kara being thrown into the Phantom Zone). It, like many Smallville seasons, ended on a cliffhanger.

As for SP, its had a good run. 8 years is more than an accomplishment, especially for a serialised show like this. It may not be the most consistent show but its worth watching for a bit of light entertainment.

  5. Thanks for that David, I was wondering when Reaper was coming back.

I love the show but for the life of me I can’t remember how S7 ended 😆 might need to go back over my downloads 😀

  6. If they don’t focus on him becomming superman this year it will be a joke – they’ve dragged out the no flying thing way past the limit. I’d love to see the 10th episode end with him becomming superman then the 2nd half of the season in 09 focus on the early days of superman as the sendoff.
