Denis Walter to exit WIN News

After 15 years reading News in regional broadcasting, Denis Walter will depart WIN for a regular radio gig.

WIN TV’s Victorian newsreader Denis Walter is leaving his presenter role after more than 15 years after being offered the afternoon shift on radio 3AW.

Walter will finish reading the local bulletin he has presented at Ballarat in November, for the afternoon vacancy following the retirement of veteran entertainer Ernie Sigley. He has been part of the 3AW stable for some time, filling in for Sigley over summer, and presenting on weekends.

But the logistics of presenting radio in Melbourne and television in Ballarat make both jobs impossible, not to mention all the travelling for the Geelong-based resident.  Together with his busy singing engagements, Walter has barely had a day off in over twelve months.

He said it was an extremely tough decision to leave the WIN News team. “I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of presenting WIN News,” he said.

“It has been an absolute honour to deliver the news that matters most to local communities, every weeknight for the past 15 years.

“If there was a way to combine both roles, I would jump at it.”

Walter started his newsreading career with WIN in 1992, after presenting the weather for National Nine News in Melbourne. Under his watch WIN’s News went from presenting two local news bulletins a day to six bulletins every weekday for all regions of Victoria and southern New South Wales.

“Denis’ dedication to presenting six local news bulletins every single weeknight to our Victorian viewers is unsurpassed,” WIN’s Michael Taylor said.
