‘Jetman’ attempts live English Channel flight

Swiss inventor 'Jetman' will fly his single, jet-propelled wing from Calais to Dover screening to 165 countries.

Swiss pilot, inventor and aviation enthusiast Yves Rossy will today attempt the impossible, flying across the English Channel in his single, jet-propelled wing. This world-attempt will air live on Nat Geo Adventure tonight from 9pm AEST.

Jetman Live is a 90 minute documentary comprises pre-recorded footage of Yves Rossy’s preparations over the last few months, followed by the live event itself. Coverage will begin in Calais, France, as Rossy reviews safety measures before take-off – especially important as his jet-propelled wing needs to be ignited while still inside a plane. He plans to land in Dover, UK.

Flying at speeds approaching 200 kilometres per hour, the 35-kilometre journey should take Rossy around 12 minutes. He has previously flown distances of 6 minutes.

If weather prevents an attempt it will be staged on Friday.

Press Release:
Today one man will venture on the journey of a lifetime and attempt the impossible – to become the first person in history to fly across the English Channel using a single, jet-propelled wing attached to his back. Swiss adventurer and pilot Yves Rossy (aka FusionMan) will jump from a plane more than 2,500 metres above ground, fire up the jets on his homemade wing and soar across the English Channel. Rossy will trace the route of French aviator Louis Blériot who became the first person to fly across the English Channel in an aeroplane 99 years ago. Flying at speeds approaching 200 kilometres per hour, the 35-kilometre journey should take Rossy around 12 minutes.

Jetman Live will be broadcast LIVE in Australia on Nat Geo Adventure Thursday September 25 at 9pm (AEST) and online at www.natgeotv.com/jetman. It will encore on National Geographic Channel, Friday September 26 at 8.30pm (AEST).

In the event unfavourable weather prevents the flight taking place on Thursday 25th September, Yves will attempt the crossing on Friday 26th September.
