Kim not so Wilde

An 80s pop star fails to shine in the Footy Show finale. You gotta love live telly.

Every year at The Footy Show Grand Final edition somebody invariably acquits themselves with a performance that has everybody talking, but for all the wrong reasons.

Last night it fell to British pop star Kim Wilde, who put in a less than exemplary vocal performance (and that’s putting it mildly). Wilde sang two numbers, Kids in America and Keep Me Hangin’ On. Her pitch wouldn’t have gotten her into the Idol top 100. It kept the 13,000 Rod Laver crowd bored rigid….

Who is it that books these acts and has anybody seen them perform in the last ten years? You have to wonder. Still we love The Footy Show finale for both its glorious and inglorious moments. Thankfully Vanessa Amorosi showed her up with a rousing, wailin’ pitch perfect rendition of Long Way To The Top.

In the player revue there was lots of dynamic dancin, and yes, the obligatory drag moment (a Bucks Fizz number), and a hot Brodie Holland.

  1. Im with Vickie, Kim wasnt as bad as everyone was saying, its live performance and yeah maybe she was a little jet lagged and a little nervous but thats live performance and usually you get time to vocally warm up to songs like those in a concert, Kim was brilliant in the Here and Now tours and maybe thats why she was booked, she is far from a hasbeen and had a huge hit with Nena throughout Europe a few years ago this decade. Most of the people I know said she was ok or good or they enjoyed it even if for the nostagia value and she looked fine for her age.

  2. Living End hasn’t “lost” it, they simply chose a poor song for the night, the footy crowd, well, they pretty much wanted “Prisoner of Society” or the big songs. TLE shouldnt have used the night to showcase new tunes but play into the wave and give em what they wanted. New fans, and the show would have been a notch better 🙂

  3. GDF, If anyone should leave The Footy Show then it might as well be Gary Lyon, the grumpy old pratt! Brayshaw is a far better host than Lyon, and sure there’s some conflict but it is only with Nth Melb (best team in the world might i add)…alot of footy media personalities have some sort of conflict at some level anyway

As for the GF Show, well The Living End really didn’t live up to the hype that their album is, and the footy review was nowhere near as well done as previous season, though it was still fairly entertaining…and Dale Thomas, for the love of god, fix that hair!
Oh and haha to Alex Fevola on street talk…who said it doesn’t run in the family eh?

  4. Have to agree with Sam’s take on My Mistake absolutely brilliant. A very underrated talent is Sam. The whole Countdown bit was awesome and including “little” Leo Sayer was a stroke of genius!

  5. Sam newman was by far and away the best part of last night’s show. His tim fin was perfect and the song was brilliant. Poor kim not to good. As for the sound you are all bang on here. if it were me i would have had em all miming!

  6. Both female performers were significantly under-whelming and not worth paying. Ms Wilde should head back to the garden where she belongs. She was off key, outta tune and it looked like bad karaoke. Her time has well ‘n truly passed. As for Amarossi, why do covers? Even a stirring rendition of Absolutely Everybody would have been more entertaining. As for the Living End, its more like the living dead.

As for the sound engineer, and his ablities last night…. time for him to be sent for re-training. It was pretty darn atrocious.

People paid good money for that. I would be asking for my money back.

Lets see how Before the Game does there GF show. Perhaos Channel Nine could connect the dots of their logo and learn something. (For starters, get a permanent female co-host, getting rid of Brayshaw – he has too many conflicts of interest)

  7. LOL@ comparing Kim Wilde to Idol contestants.
Seems to me Kim had NO idea what the hell she was doing there, same with the Audience, not so much the average performance but why the hell did they get her?? I really don’t think Miss Wilde has to prove to the Aussie Footy Crowd and its online critics the status she has reached with her music as well as behind the scenes work. It makes people saying negative comments sound ill-informed. The production set up was awful, and you claim Amorosi was great but damn, all the acts were taped with live vocals over top, except Living End and the last truly tragic song Long Way. Could Amorosi have looked more unco and uncomfortable?
To be honest the single most stellar performance of the night was Sam Newman doing Split Enz, I had to do a double take, the satire was great and he nailed it. Amazing.
The Player spots are a bit over the top, some of the players take it sooo seriously, like it will become some actual career option down the line. I cant be too harsh on the show, I knew half the dancers and they work friggin hard!
And Dave! I thought you’d enjoy seeing some of those players do there thing!!!

  8. I have only watched half the show so far, but the sound engineer should look for another job. The sound was terrible all through and what is with AFL players and their children !!

  9. She looks like she’s actually lost weight compared with a pic I saw of her about a deacde ago!

Actually, I disagree David – considering the quality of 90% of Idol08, she would have quite comfortably made the Top 12! Can you imagine her an Tom doing a duet?!!??

  10. She wasn’t great but it was awesome just to see her do Kids In America live! As for the review..well the less said about Collingwood’s tragic Bucks Fizz impersonation the better! Just cringeworthy. Overall a very entertaining show though and the top 8 Countdown bit at the opening was brilliant.

  11. I was really looking forward to Kim performing last night but she was beyond awful.
Out of tune, off pitch, out of time – why on earth did channel 9 book her.
Obviously the producers of the show would have seen her soundcheck – if I was running the show & her soundcheck was that bad I wouldnt let her on to perform, knowing she will make a fool of herself, which is exactly what happened!
I thought she was drunk – maybe she thought it was another pub gig.
Someone should also tell her to lay off the meat pies because she looked like a tub of lard shuffling around the stage – give it up Kim or at least hit the singing classes & the gym!

  12. I think “Bored Rigid” is your new favourite expression since that media realease of Sevens last week David : )

I loved Kim Wilde as a boy but wasnt willing to subject myself to watching the footy show to see her perform, doesnt sound like I missed much!
