Police defend footage in Crime Investigation story

WA Police respond to criticism that kept CCTV footage from the public, releasing it just prior to a Crime Investigation Australia story.

Western Australian Police have defended a decision to withhold closed circuit television video in the Jane Rimmer murder case, which was screened in Crime Investigation Australia.

WA Police Commissioner, Karl O’Calaghan, said CCTV footage of one of the victims of the Claremont serial murders was not released earlier because of its poor quality.

The footage was withheld for 12 years before being released to the public last month. It was only released by police just prior to its screening on the Crime & Investigation show, a move roundly criticised by media in Perth.

The CCTV footage shows murder victim Jane Rimmer being approached by a man outside the Continental Hotel in Claremont on the night she was killed in 1996.

Police say they have been unable to identify the man despite showing the footage to 700 people who were at the hotel that night.

Police say they have had 300 calls from the public offering information since the footage was released.
