Torchwood simmers while AFL burns

Fans of Captain Jack & co. do not adjust your set. Your call is important to us.

Fans of Captain Jack and co. you have the Brownlow Medal and 90210 to “thank” for this.

This Monday night there is no Torchwood because of the AFL‘s night of nights at Crown Casino. That means 90210 and Burn Notice are also off air as a result. In NSW and QLD, TEN has 90210 followed by highlights from the Emmy Awards.

So on Monday September 29 there is still some adjustment to do. Viewers in Vic, SA and WA will have a double 90210 in order to catch up to other states, followed by Burn Notice at 10:30pm (9:30pm in NSW / Qld).

But that means no Torchwood again. For viewers in AFL states it is back with its fourth episode of the second season, “Meat” on Monday October 6 at 10:30pm.

This post updates.

  1. Hey Helen, just wanted to comment on your ABC remarks….I too would love the ABC to pick up Season 3 of TW, but I sort of get the impression that it is unlikely to happen, at least that is how it sounded in an email reply I received from them.

    Email extract below –
Unfortunately at present the ABC does not own the rights to screen any of the series of the program you are enquiring about. Please be assured that your request has been noted and made available to Television Programming so that they are aware of audience interest in this program. As I am sure you can imagine the ABC receives many requests to purchase programs, and it is not possible to fulfil them all.

We can only hope that there is a turn around and that the ABC considers purchasing Season 3 (after all, Doctor Who Season 5 is a cut down season as well, so it makes sense to secure both series’ under those circumstances).

  2. I totally agree with what has been written and am sure many past fans of TW don’t even know that it is still available (only if you have HD).

I say since the word is that TW Series 3 is only going to a 5 part mini series as yet why can’t ten let go of TW and hand the torch to ABC who have the match ready to light it by having Doctor Who on their books.

  3. JJ, yes its on in victoria, but only on HD.

I thought the point of putting this stuff on HD was because it was the type of shows that generally got f*ed around by the networks, so it gives the more niche audience a chance to watch them.

Last week I had the end missing because they pushed everything back and didn’t have the electronic guide adjusted, because i just record it on IQ2 and watch the next night.

  4. What’s the point in having two different streams (SD & HD) if they don’t use them for two different programming options?

Torchwood was buried on HD only because TEN decided it wasn’t good enough for the more popular SD channel, but is still prepared to dump it simply due to programming changes on their SD channel.

Why can’t they rearrange the SD lineup for the Brownlow, 90210, Burn Notice, whatever, and just leave the HD channel programming and Torchwood alone?

  5. This is why networks turn people off them with their disregard for running a series with some semblance of a schedule.

People are prepared to wait a while to see a series but give up when screened sporadic, held over, or padded with repeats.

Something all the commercial networks seem pretty adept at!

  6. The reason, or one of the reasons why 10 put all the “cult” like shows on the HD channel is due to the programmers not putting much faith in them on the SD channel, and in some ways, no faith at all in certain shows like the US Office(which is not on either SD or HD channel).
Torchwood is the former of this, it has been tried on the SD channel when it first appeared on 10, eventually it ended up on the HD only.
It does not make any sense if they even screw around with programming on the HD channel, that they won’t even show the Office on this channel(HD), why buy this type of programming if they are not going to screen them? Nine has their CSI shows, It seems 10 love playing nothing more than Law and Order(and it’s various spinoffs).

  7. Why oh why won’t they play Torchwood on non-HD? You’d think Ten would be trying to leverage off the Doctor Who fan base given it’s rating so well for ABC.
I know it’s not strictly the same audience, but still…. I hate that I can’t watch it.

  8. yes i thought this is what would happen, oh well, after this messiness it should get back to regular hopefully, although any off weeks of 90210 in america will mess us up, and burn notice is over soon. but hopefully they’ll be able to keep torchwood running steady at 10:30pm

  9. Sorry to say this..but “Sucked in” -to quote a very old saying. Now you HDers can feel what us nonHDers feel about not getting Torchwood. Sorry to sound so disgruntled (for want of a better word)

  10. Okay this is just a mess now!

I’m sure it would be better for all if they had the same 90210/BN is all states at the same time, can’t they find something else to fill the night for the non Brownlow states?

Or we could just go watch both the Emmys and Brownlow live on payTV!
