Newman tribute on FOX Classics

You wanted it, you got it. The Sting, The Long Hot Summer, The Hustler and more feature in another salute.

Following on from Movie Extra’s Paul Newman tribute, Fox Classics will also acknowledge his body of work with five films introduced by Bill Collins.

Next week it will strip The Long Hot Summer, The Hustler, The Sting, Slap Shot and Absence of Malice, beginning 8:30pm AEDT from Monday night.

FOX Classics will pay tribute to Paul Newman, with special presentations of five of his great movies in the 8.30pm (AEDT) weeknight slot, starting Monday, October 6.

Bill Collins will introduce each of the films, providing his insights into the productions and the enduring star power of Newman.

The line-up is:

Monday October 6 at 8.30pm – The Long Hot Summer (1958)
Newman co-stars with his wife Joanne Woodward plus Anthony Franciosa, Orson Welles, Lee Remick and Angela Lansbury.

Tuesday October 7at 8.30pm – The Hustler (1961)
One of Newman’s most acclaimed performances, he plays the young pool player Fast Eddie Felson. Although he missed out on the Academy Award for Best Actor that year, he finally won the Oscar for his 1986 reprisal of the Fast Eddie character, alongside Tom Cruise in The Color of Money. The Hustler co-stars Jackie Gleeson, Piper Laurie and George C. Scott, who were also each nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Actress Oscars for their roles.

Wednesday October 8 at 8.30pm – The Sting (1973)
The movie won seven Oscars, including Best Picture. Newman co-stars with Robert Redford.

Thursday October 9 at 8.30pm – Slap Shot (1977)
Newman is the player/coach of a small town professional ice hockey team.

Friday October 10 at 8.30pm – Absence of Malice (1981)
Newman co-stars with Sally Field. Directed by Sydney Pollack.
