Number’s up for lotto draws

By David Knox on October 3, 2008 / Filed Under News 11

Earlier this week the Seven Network indicated a forthcoming change to its broadcasts of lotto draws, that will see broadcasts only for draws of more than $15million and a “streamlined presentation” for draws of less than this amount in some markets.

Seven currently airs a number of draws including Powerball, Super7 Oz Lotto and Saturday Tattslotto.

For several months the network has been working under an expired agreement, but as it now seeks to finalise new arrangements it will introduce the new broadcasts anyway.

Tattersalls recently won a licence to run a new mid-week lotto game on Monday and Wednesday nights in several states.

Press Release (Seven):
We have been exploring for some time with Australian Lotto Bloc the promotion and broadcast of Lotto draws – in particular the streamlining of on-air television presentation and meeting the demands of all of our viewers and those who are playing in a draw.

We believe we have come up with the best solution that meets these objectives and are currently finalising a new agreement with Australian Lotto Bloc (ALB).

For several months, we have been working under an expired agreement with Australian Lotto Bloc while we finalise a new agreement.

We are introducing the new broadcast arrangements while we finalise this agreement with ALB. This sees the streamlining of coverage of lotto draws on television in some markets – with broadcasts continuing for draws involving first division prize pools of more than $15 million and a new streamlined presentation of results for all draws with a first division prize under $15 million – with winning numbers only provided as on-screen information during regular programmes.

Why? The Wednesday Gold Lotto draw in Queensland, always offers the same prize every week, $1 million. Hence under the new regulations, the actual draw would not be aired every week.

I would say, the gigs up for the Gold Lotto brand in Queensland… I have expected this decision since Tatts bought all of the shares of Golden Casket in early 2007. Sure Tatts has a exclusive Queensland lottery licence with the state government until 2016, but if the Queensland-only Wednesday draw is dropped in favor of a national game, then Queensland will be the only state without a local lotto, only the national games.

As for streamlining, I would say, due to this announcement Nine has probably lost the rights to the NSW lotto draws.

why can’t they put them on at the end of the news or Today Tonight instead of during regular programmes. I agree we have enough screen crap as it is without this as well.

While I was watching Packed to the Rafters, Seven took up a third of the screen with bloody Lotto numbers.

Why can’t they just wait to the break to put that on? It was rather distracting!

I remember when I was a very young kid, the Gold Lotto/Tattslotto draws were a “must see”! The excitement when they introduced “midweek lotto” was amazing!! Here in QLD, the old carbonised paper entry tickets had to be submitted by 5pm the day before the draw in Melbourne, since they had to be flown down to Tattersalls headquarters to be officially registered (I sound really old now, but we’re only talking about the 80s here!). Then Powerball came along and kind of muddied the waters. It seems that now, Seven is a bit lotto-ed out.

What I hate is when the numbers appear on screen during the program you’re trying to watch, I’d much rather an ad break. Actually I HATE the growing amount of on screen crap they put n during the show just to push a show and save them 30 seconds worth of ad time!

All broadcasts of lotto draws – quaint relics of the past – should have been off the air a decade ago. This, at least, is some progress.

Will Nine in Sydney do something similar? I guess they will not have any choice with the Saturday draw. If Seven in Melbourne does not cover the draw then they will not be supplying Nine in Sydney with the vision.
