The very private Kevin Sheedy talks candidly about being sacked as coach from Essendon Football Club in 2007.

Although the football codes season is over, fans of AFL might want to check our Australian Story on Monday.

The subject is Kevin Sheedy who, after 40 years of either playing or coaching top-level football, was dumped as coach by Essendon Football Club in 2007.

James Hird speaks also speaks openly about his friend and mentor, “I think we were all really worried about him. Like he just looked shocked about it all and everyone was like “Oh gee I hope he’s going to get through this”.

After 40 years of either playing or coaching top-level football, Sheedy was unceremoniously sacked as coach for Essendon Football Club in 2007. For the first time he talks candidly about leaving Essendon and the new goals he’s kicking.

His wife, Geraldine, and four children reveal what it’s like living with a legend and the personal impact of his dismissal.

“It was a tough time when Kevin’s time was up. You always know that that time’s going to come, you’re not going to be somewhere forever, but when it actually comes it was more the way it was handled that was disappointing and upsetting,” recalls Geraldine.
