I need my ratings fix!! Any word on Week 42 ratings yet? heheh

  3. Paul October 13, 2008 at 4:26 pm -

David, surely at 957,000 The Strip should appear in the top 100 at about 45th place. Seems to be missing. Last weeks episode was actually better scripted and acted than the earlier offerings, holding out some hope for this to improve.
Off topic but Canal Road was better scripted and acted but absolutely murdered by Ch 9. I like The Mentalist and hope it lasts but not The Fringe. Ch7 & ch 2 still dominate my viewing though.

  4. Jono October 12, 2008 at 8:37 pm -

TGA will be making a new season (I think have to talk to my recources) But if the ratings continue to fall it will be a waste of money. Its shame too I really enjoyed the second episode. People were turned off from watching it because the first episode was below all the hype.

The second episode was a good step in the right direction.

“Does anyone know why SBS showed an episode from Season 4 of Mythbusters on Saturday when the previous episodes being shown were from Season 6.”

I want to know this also, not that any Mythbusters is bad and it let me record an ep I don’t have but they are still to finish S6 and S7 is on in the US.

Can we expect to get more S4 until 09?

BTW good numbers for the v8s!

I love the people that come on this blog and say “I love Prison Break”, “I love Lost”, “I love Heroes”, “I hate Today Tonight”, “I hate Border Secuiry”, “the evil TV networks are always messing with my favourite shows, i’m so hurt by it and i’m going to punish them by not watching”. Its hilarious.

No one has said that, you’re just twisting people’s words around to try and get a reaction out of people. For one, I highly doubt that anyone would be “hurt” by a TV network, I download those because I can’t be assed sitting at a certain time in a certain place every week, I like to fit it in with my schedule as I see fit, not any of this “fight the superstructure of the corporate entities we call television networks” crap that you seem to be spouting from your mind. If anything, all you’ve proved is you’re insecure about other people’s OPINIONS on the INTERNETS and you enjoy twisting their words to make them appear as if they’re highly emotive about a subject as trivial as television. If I find a show to be a woeful waste of celluloid, like Border Security and 2.5 men, I’ll express my opinion, but that doesn’t mean I “hate it” or “want to punish TV networks by not watching”, it means I have a different taste than you. Try building a bridge.

  9. jezza October 11, 2008 at 11:33 pm -

wow moving wipeout + hole in the wall was a really bad move by nine.

  10. Dan October 11, 2008 at 10:39 pm -

I actually think that the entire series on DVD has effected the ratings of so many shows. It’s so good to be able to watch them in your own time and without commercials.

As for the lack of interest in shows that were once the most popular, I am the only one in my family that has stuck with shows such as Lost, Prison Break and Hero’s. A lot of others I know have also given up but it did have a lot to do with the chopping and changing of nights and times. Once people missed a couple of shows they didn’t understand what was going on, so they gave up. I use my hard disk recorder a lot, actually I record a lot of shows and watch them when it suits me better. I’ve only just gotten into the whole thing of downloading shows but have only done it with Lost and Dexter so far.

I very rarely would watch a movie on TV and then it might only be on in the background, normally I’ve seen them on DVD. It really is strange how the viewing habbits have changed from when I was a kid. I remember the Sunday night movie being such a big deal, plus I use to have to ask my parents really nicely if I could stay up to watch it, doubt any kid would have to do that these days.

  11. IMO October 11, 2008 at 9:19 pm -

Benno, I’d say you’re right about people watching DVDs instead. I for one got sick of the channels mucking around with the programming of favourite shows, and have waited for DVDs instead. In the case of The Sopranos’ final season, it was already out on DVD before 9 finally got around to showing it. Same with The West Wing, brushed by 9 and finally shown by 2. We have persisted with LOST though, but when it moved to the later timeslot, we recorded it and watched episodes back to back which alleviated the frustration caused by the show’s drawn-out storylines. As for Heroes, we’ve watched previous seasons but decided to miss the new one and hire it on DVD later. It’s good to be able to control the timing, rather than have your show halted mid-season like the channels are want to do for things such as Easter for example. I don’t remember the last time I was able to watch a whole season of a show without there being a disruption. I will also download but only if I’m desperate as it uses too much MB.

  12. Benno October 11, 2008 at 7:37 pm -

I never said that 1.6 million downloaded the show, i said that there is no way that 80% (1.6 million) lost interest in the show since that is the difference from premiere to last episode aired here. My guess is about 600,000 people watched a downloaded copy, or waited for dvd’s instead of watch it on 7. That would mean that 1 million (half the audience) lost interest, which would be a huge number. Of course, i don’t have real figures, but lost in the states has only lost about 30% of its audience from its premiere.

  13. Carta October 11, 2008 at 7:08 pm -

Benno, I doubt 1.6m Australians download “Lost”. My entire extended family watched it religiously for the first couple of seasons and now none of us watch it, although I’ve bought the DVDs and intend to watch them one day. I know we’re only talking about 20 people here, but it’s more likely that people lost interest in the show than 80% of the audience decided to download it.

PB, on the other hand, is something that we all record and watch….although I’m not sure how OzTam deals with recorded shows (does the recorded show get the rating or the one on the screen at the time? Does using OzTam mean you can’t record something and watch something else?).

  14. Billy October 11, 2008 at 5:30 pm -

Wow. Hole in Wall and Wipeout really tanked last night, mabye Primevil will take its place. I was just wondering if you had the ratings for the Sawshank Redemption on 9 last night.

  15. John October 11, 2008 at 4:56 pm -

Is neighbours getting less then 0.3 viewers?
i thought it did better then that?

  16. David Knox October 11, 2008 at 3:54 pm -

Sorry, might get something on Monday….hard to get figures on the wkend.

  17. Brendan October 11, 2008 at 3:40 pm -

    David

Could you keep us up to date with the rateing for the Bathurst 1000 over the weekend?

    Any numbers for Friday afternoon?

  18. Benno October 11, 2008 at 10:48 am -

Carta, i never watched lost, but it started with over 2 million here, and was down to about 400,000. I guarantee that 80% of the audience didn’t lose interest, and found it elsewhere. Same with prison break. I think it makes a huge difference for ‘cult’ serial shows if you will.

  19. Craig October 11, 2008 at 8:32 am -

PB is 6 eps behind us as of right now and before the next ep airs it will again be 7 eps behind, putting it closer to 2 months, not that it matters ’cause IMO anything over 2 weeks is NOT fast tracking!

I agree that the DL make up a small part of the audiance and most of those are likely to watch it again anyway, I think it has more to do with the lack of promotion and the crap 10:30 start!. Heroes and the others were all flat Thursday, all getting about the same numbers with only L&O breaking 1 mill and not by a huge amount. Maybe the problem is there is no clear leader at 8:30 on Thursday? Lets see what happens with Amazing Race next week.

  20. Carta October 10, 2008 at 11:35 pm -

Prison Break is only about 5 weeks behind the US, not 2 months. OK, so we’re talking 5-6 weeks, but those few weeks make a difference :-) .

I haven’t downloaded PB in advance this time because it’s being shown so soon after its airdate in the US. No need to use the bandwidth! In any case, Dr Who had finished in the UK before it even started here and look how well it rated….! I doubt downloads have that much of an impact on Australian ratings.

  21. knoxoverstreet October 10, 2008 at 8:14 pm -

Mushi re Heroes it’s more a rip off of the far superior The 4400. It’s a dumbed down version of that show IMO.

  22. Rutzie October 10, 2008 at 7:48 pm -

Thursday is definitely Seven’s weakest night. I think The Amazing Race will probably do better at 8.30pm next week than Heroes did. As much as I love an Aussie show The Strip is terrible and should not be viewed by anyone.

  23. Jim October 10, 2008 at 6:53 pm -

andy if you’d seen the strip you wouldn’t be saying that!

  24. Mushi October 10, 2008 at 6:43 pm -

Soooo glad to see heroes do badly. Am I the only one that can see it is just a straight rip off from the X-Men??!!
2.5 men still throws me, try as I might I just can’t find a laugh in that show…..still 1.1mil people can’t be wrong……can they???

  25. Bob October 10, 2008 at 6:24 pm -

David, Is there any chance of ratings for Scrubs?

  26. DAN October 10, 2008 at 6:22 pm -

I wish that RPA could have done better although 964 is still pretty good for that slot would love to see it around 1.2 or so I wish they would also make more than a handful of episodes per series

  27. andy October 10, 2008 at 4:58 pm -

I don’t watch the strip but it’s good to see it’s hanging on. I’m sure if it cracked the mill next week nine would be very happy with the way it is heading.

  28. jak October 10, 2008 at 4:53 pm -

Heroes naturally does worse than Ghost Whisperer etc becuase it has a sci-fi flavour which is not everyones cup of tea and relys on an ongoing story line that people don’t care enough to keep up with.

Everyone has different preferences, but television networks put on the shows that attaract viewers because they need to make money and there is not point putting on things that noone is watching because then no one wants to advertise. Its just like Tim Worner from Seven said in the paper today “The aim of our game is to try to please most of the people most of the time and it’s a very tricky equation”.

So to everyone lamenting the poor ratings of Prison Break that have it relegated to 10:30pm, they should be thankful it is on at all, and they actually have the option to watch it on TV albeit weeks behind the US, with those figures it should be online only!

  29. Dakota October 10, 2008 at 4:53 pm -

    Heyhey David,

Has Neighbours been going ok this week? The quality of the scripts and direction and even the acting has been fantastic!

  30. Craig October 10, 2008 at 4:32 pm -

Love how ch9 is promoting Fringe “Smash Hit” I guess they all do that, then pull the show the following week LOL

Okay time to watch Heroes ep 3&4…

  31. RichoTB October 10, 2008 at 1:36 pm -

BTW Seven won’t be pullingHeroes any time soon. The numbers its pulling at the moment are pretty much on par with what Ghost Whisperer had before it, and The Amazing Race is taking the 8:30pm slot next week anyway

  32. RichoTB October 10, 2008 at 1:34 pm -

I’m not surprised Heroes is ailing after Seven’s treatment of it last year. Its more a cult show – one with a dedicated and passionate fanbase that prefer to watch through other methods. I figured the figures would be less than 900,000, particularly after the 10 month hiatus and the massive drop of quality in the second season. PB and Heroes have both done massive comebacks this year and their current seasons are infinitely superior to last year’s. I too have been watching online and by the time Seven premiered season 3 last night, I was already 4 eps ahead.

BTW, it really isn’t surprising at all that brilliant shows like Heroes, PB and LOST dive in the ratings when you see that crap like 2.5 Men, Today Tonight, ACA and Border Security are the stuff which rates the best. That in itself says enough about the appalling taste of the nation

  33. Trevor October 10, 2008 at 1:01 pm -

I reckon if prison break was put on at 9:30 and got advertised it would have got more that heros did

  34. leeds October 10, 2008 at 12:48 pm -

I think Thursdays are turning into friday nights ratings. Poor figures for every show. Look at the decline in viewers for seven news. Not sure how Law and Order: Criminal Intent got those ratings. The promo during the week for it was embarrasing.

  35. Craig October 10, 2008 at 12:25 pm -

Good one L&O CI beating off Heroes and the Strip!

The Amazing Race will be interesting next week.

BTW how can ch7 call Prison Break “Fast Tracked” when they are almost 2 months behind the US?

  36. knoxoverstreet October 10, 2008 at 11:59 am -

Yeah I tried Packed To The Rafters too and found it rather ho-hum. Certainly doesn’t deserve the ratings it gets.

And is it just me or are the ratings for Thursday night at an all time low? Interesting to see The Strip pick up with Heroes as competition. And how long will Seven keep Heroes on with those numbers?

  37. Ben October 10, 2008 at 11:34 am -

Ten has a show getting over a million? They haven’t had that for a while.

Oh so happy to see Heroes rate so low (losing to The Strip – lol). It’s just a show that I have never been able to get into.

  38. Luke W October 10, 2008 at 11:16 am -

Prison Break deserves those ratings. Considering myself and others were 7 episodes ahead before the first one even aired on Seven. I just hope Seven give it a proper fast-tracking when it catches up to the U.S.

  39. Chris October 10, 2008 at 10:37 am -

Heroes and Prison Break didn’t do so well, which is disappointing bc Heroes is a great show – i can understand prison break – that has completely lost me!

But overall, generally low figures – only 5 shows over 1 million viewers!

Will be interesting to see how the amazing race goes against the strip next thursday.

  40. meiji-era October 10, 2008 at 12:46 am -

The ABC is Giving TEN a Headache now….

Top Gear ratings Dropped? Not really surprised…

Spics and Specks back to 1.3 Million,Yey! I really love the Show….

ABC will surely be getting its Best Share since 1991…Go ABC!!!!

  41. Spunkymonkeycaesar October 9, 2008 at 8:42 pm -

Stevie G, I too managed to finally catch Packed to the Rafters on Tuesday night to see what all the fuss was about, and I too “…really don’t know what the fuss is about. Sorry, but it isn’t that good. 2.5 men on the other hand is packed with well rounded funny characters. I agree nine is definatley overkilling it, but I will be back watching the brand new ep next Tuesday night.” With that said I agree with you Michael when you wrote: “So forgive me for watching the only ‘decent’ alternative [Two and a Half Men]“.

    - Spunkymonkeycaesar

  42. Travis October 9, 2008 at 8:41 pm -

What demos does Criminal Minds attract? Is it the more younger viewers? I have never watched it to know.

  43. AAronS October 9, 2008 at 7:22 pm -

Great to see Hollowmen pushing the one mill mark, last this err second series has been great, the last weeks episode was the best one yet.

  44. Faik October 9, 2008 at 6:29 pm -

how can House be doing so terribly? its such a great show :(

  45. Neil October 9, 2008 at 5:50 pm -

So David does that mean they plan to follow the US Ratings system with Live+SD & Live+7 numbers? It would defently be a more interesting way of recording out ratings figures

H&A fell quite alot last night, down to just over 1Mil, a number usually reserved for Friday nights…2.5 Men beat it for the first time so far this week
Ouch for TEN….i feel sorry for them, they have 2 hours of fantastic TV (House & Life) and they still get smashed!
8.30 Wed (for now at least) looks like the fast-tracked timeslot for the Big Three….all the the series (House, Fringe & Criminal Minds) will be direct (or as close as possible) from the US

Great news for aussie TV viewers

  46. MDF October 9, 2008 at 3:40 pm -

2.5 men takes minor slip. surely thats an early sign it is beginning to be overcooked? surely nine should take out at least the tuesday hour. i actually dont mind the show but 10 eps a week is far too much! especially considering their all repeats

criminal minds very strong, especially for the repeat. great “cliffhanger” although since the new season starts next wednesday i guess we cant really call it that here

surely by now people have realised house eps are actually a new series? maybe we’ve just grown tired of the formula/characters. its hard to belive the show could almost halve its ratings just because of the lead in.

will nine keep fringe going? do they have anything else? i smell 2 hourr 2.5 men wednesdays soon enough……

ABC2 is tallied in ratings because it isn’t high definition, last shows they were gloating about were Keating: The Musical and Paralympics. HD channels are not yet rated but it’s coming. I hear 2010 they also plan to track time shifting.

I love all these people predicting the end of shows (DWTS/2.5men).

  49. Benno October 9, 2008 at 1:49 pm -

Channel 10 did the same with criminal intent back in the day – at the end of the new episode they wouldn’t show the credits, instead show an ad break, come back from ad break, skip the intro, and get straight into the repeat episode. Very confusing and deceptive.

At least a plus is that 2 1/2 men dropped from 1.6m to 1.4m.

I knew it, put a new show like jamies with little notice, not many people know it is on. Or perhaps people are sick of cooking shows.

Channel 9 – ADVERTISE fringe finishing late – of course the next show on is going to record low ratings when it stars 10 minutes late. Not just this week as evidence, but other weeks too.

ABC are really powering this week I see.

“Question for David, are OzTam going to go down the line of US and introduce the DVD-R + 7 ratings into the system anytime in the future?” – They could, but they prove little use over there, because additional dvr ratings don’t really help advertisers. But they do have dvr figures up to 3am the next day though.

Dave: Out of interest, do you know what the highest rating digital only shows are? (i.e. those not showing on the five main channels)

7 did a clever job last night showing the repeat of Criminal Minds like 2 seconds after the next. Since the last episode of the third season and with the first of the 4th season on next week, I was disappointed how seven did this. I thought they might of created more suspense for the viewers at home.

Another set of poor figures for House and Fringe. Long gone are the days of 1mil + for House. Ten must be very disappointed.

2.5men still amazes me – I cant believe so many ppl watch that crap, esp. wen it is on 10 times a wk (i could understand if it was only on a cpl of times)

7 will once again win this week easily, even with 9s enhanced sunday – which means 7 has won this year and made it back-to-back!!! GO SEVEN!!

How’s Newstopia go this week, minus the SBS transmission error? Loved Shaun making fun of that at the end too, great stuff

They’ve been advertising the Mentalist since Sunday about the encore screening being on.

Fringe’s ratings were poor, who knows if school holidays affected any of these ratings, since some of the shows were down across the board.

House picked up a few viewers from last week, but Ten would still be disappointed with Jamie’s ratings.

Question for David, are OzTam going to go down the line of US and introduce the DVD-R + 7 ratings into the system anytime in the future?

Good to see 2.5men do well again. As for repeats it’s so damn hilarious it’s very rewatchable. People would rather lol then watch that ponce Jamie or be bored by yet more 7 factuals.

    Ouch for Home & Away.

What The F… are people doing watching a re-run of 2.5 Men???

Not good signs for Fringe, I bet like Moonlight it will vanish without a trace and House, that isn’t doing much better, ditto for Jamie and just about any other show not on ch7. I though the Mentalist would pick up a few more but I didn’t know it was on till the end of Fringe so did they even advertise it?

  57. Rutzie October 9, 2008 at 11:00 am -

Be interesting to see what Nine does with Fringe now that it has dropped below 800,000 viewers even with a strong lead in. What was the point of putting The Mentalist pilot on within a couple of days of it first airing in a 9.30pm timeslot. Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food bombed almost as bad as BR: Bali did. Really enjoyed the behind the scenes special of Spicks & Specks last night.

Rush needs more promotion from 10. It has to stay at a 9.30 slot because of it’s rating and if 10 move it now I think they will drop more viewers. There has been too many changes of late with their programming.

I hope 10 has the courage to stick with Rush and give the go ahead for a second series because I am so tired of all the American drivel that is on our screens. It’s great that you can re-watch the episodes on the 10 website.

they should fast track 30 rock at a better time for this upcoming third season, then maybe more than 200,000 will tune in :S f’n seven

I watched PTTR for the first time last night… and really I don’t know what the fuss is about. Sorry, but it isn’t that good. 2.5 men on the other hand is packed with well rounded funny characters. I agree nine is definatley overkilling it, but I will be back watching the brand new ep next Tuesday night.

  61. Michael October 8, 2008 at 10:45 pm -

For me, Tuesday is by far the worst night of television and I feel no show is targeted at me (18-25 Male) besides Two and a Half Men. So forgive me for watching the only ‘decent’ alternative.

  62. Neil October 8, 2008 at 9:41 pm -

Ralph, i think it’s a bit stone-age to believe only bogans go for the Holden V Ford ideaology
But anyway, TGA lacks alot and it;s not hard to see – the hosts need to be more honest, and when you do a comparision, actually do it properly! burnouts are great, but give the 2 cars a real comparision and decide a winner – every other car magazine can

Nine really do suck, they had the NRL GF and they are already far behind Seven after just 3 days…Seven are already at 31.3% share for the week so far, with Nine at 27.3%
PTTR is killing it, and it’s little wonder – brilliant series that makes it easy for viewers to not only connect with but also enjoy with it’s great mix of comedy & drama…characters are all well set up and enjoyable to watch
Rush needs a new timeslot, it’s getting killed by All Saints (which is doing fantastically might i add)…9.30 behind House sounds good (that’s if moving Jamie this week helps House)

How much life can 20 to 1 really have left? It’s a rapidly ageing concept, though one which still (somehow) manages to rate

  63. classclown October 8, 2008 at 9:02 pm -

KAK is a television icon and deserves to be No.1. it really the only 9 show I watch.
