ACA accused of chequebook journalism

Updated: Roberta Williams has since told The Australian Seven had also offered her money. She said reporter Clare Brady had called her three times, first to offer her condolences and then to secure an interview for which she was prepared to pay “more than Channel Nine”.

A Current Affair has been accused of paying Roberta Williams $40,000 for her interview on the death of Barbara Williams last night.

News.com.au claims there was a rumoured chequebook battle with Today Tonight.

But a Channel 7 spokesman denied TT was part of the bidding yesterday, when contacted for comment.

“Seven did not offer a single cent. Nine offered $40,000 and that offer was accepted,” the Seven publicist said.

Mrs Williams was found dead in her Melbourne home on Saturday, after a suspected overdose of prescription pills and sparkling wine.

Earlier this year Today Tonight had a much-publicised “gangland mums” interview between Barbara Williams and Judy Moran.

    Why pay her ?
Surely paying for someone like Les Twentyman or another charity/welfare organisation would be better
Time for Current affairsshows or networks to “come out in public and tell us who is paid for opinion and not try and hide it.

if people didn’t watch their programs, ACA and TT wouldn’t be able to throw money at people like Roberta Williams. the best thing we can do is simply turn off.

So Roberta is happy to take $40,000 to talk about the overdose death of her mother-in-law?

It should be illegal for people to profit out of the family’s crimes ACA should be so heavily fined that it would put them off the air I am so glad that last nights episode was such a low rating one

Gee, seems like a mutally-benefical relationship, scum benefiting scum. I just love how all these gangland wives seem to revel in playing the victim whenever interviewed!

Oh, the things I could say that are so, so wrong with all this Roberta-love.

Unfortunately, all of them would contain observations that would get me shot. So I’ll spare you all for the sake of the children.

If it is true, what a complete waste of money.
They should use that money to pay the interest on their loans instead of some wanna be who should just go away and be quiet.

Simply disgusting that this hag continues to profit from her families crimes.
