AR2 to spark second American Revolution

Prison Break and West Wing producers are developing a drama about an uprising of American civilians against authority.

Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring and The West Wing director/producer Thomas Schlamme is developing a drama about a group of Midwestern youths who spark a second American Revolution: AR2.

Scheuring calls the project ‘Les Miserables’ in modern America.

It is set in Michigan, home of the top U.S. automakers, where “corporations undermine the common man and the government is not interested in helping (the common man),” he said.

AR2 will explore how the revolting college students, as well as the military and the law enforcement officers who oppose them, perceive patriotism.

“It looks into what happens on both sides of the conflict and how that affects the personal lives of all involved,” Scheuring said.

The project is being developed for the FX Network.

“The subject matter could be incendiary, and we were afraid that it may adulterate the message if it went to a broadcast network,” Schlamme said.

In 1987 the miniseries Amerika showed the country had been bloodlessly taken over by the Soviet Union, leading to slave-labor camps for some, collaboration for others and rebellion for yet others. AR2 sounds like its enemy is within. An interesting proposition in the time of Barack Obama.
