Gallery: Commander in Chief

From fictional to biographic, here are some of the presidents television has seen.

Some are fictional, some are actors in biographic roles, but all have been American Presidents on television.

Dennis Haysbert (pictured) portraying President David Palmer in 24 was so impressive in the role that some online polls (including in the UK) put him as “television’s favourite president.” Not a bad feat considering Martin Sheen played the role for 148 episodes on The West Wing.

Here are some others who have spent time in the oval office (and a few presidents without a White House).

President Matthew Santos (Jimmy Smits) The West Wing

President Wayne Palmer (D.B. Woodside) 24

President Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin) 24

President Mackenzie Allen (Geena Davis) Commander in Chief

President Caroline Reynolds (Patricia Wettig)  Prison Break

President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) Battlestar Galactica

President Henry Hayes (William Devane) Stargate-SG1

President Ronald Reagan (James Brolin) The Reagans

President John Adams (Paul Giamatti) John Adams

And there was also 24’s President John Keeler (Geoff Pierson), President Julia Mansfield (Patty Duke) Hail to the Chief, President Garner (Fred Willard) in Lois and Clark.

In November 24 inaugurates President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) in 24: Redemption.

And your guide to Election Coverage is here.

  1. @Sharpy – well in the 2004 campaign there were Bartlett for America lawn signs, buttons etc all over the place – I was in the US in October 04 and saw Bartlett stuff everywhere and there was also a push for people to put Jed Bartlett in as the ‘write-in’ candidate on their ballots.

Bartlett is definitely my favourite of all those Presidents… West Wing is one of the very few TV series I can watch over and over again – thanks heavens for DVD sets

  2. I have to agree i liked bartlett as president, heck half the reason i have been interested in this election was due to watching west wing and then seeing the real thing in action. But the other president i would have loved to see more of was gena davies in commander in Chief. While the show was only on for a short time and sits on my dvd shelf, i did think she made a interesting president and i really wish i could have seen more of that show to see just what would happen next. Also i would have liked to seen jimmy smitts play presedient if they continued west wing in to the new presidents term. thoe it could have easily been alan alda as president if the passing of a key actor to the west wing hadnt happened and they didnt decide to change who won the election to smitt’s character.

  3. not to be picky but when was, President Laura Roslin, President of the USA? granted ive only see the mini series & the 1st series of BSG, but I dont recall reading about her becoming President of the USA, if/when they reach Earth?

What about President-elect Arthur Coleman Winters, in Doctor Who

  4. David Palmer gets my vote……..I dont think Laura Roslin should be included as she’s president of the 12 colonies – unlike the others, who are all presidents of the U.S.

On a side note – does anyone else watching the current election coverage in the states, feel like it’s the last few episodes of the first season of 24? 🙂
