Hannah Montana episode dropped

Parents' protests unnerve Disney who pull an episode of Hannah Montana which deals with diabetes.

You have to wonder sometimes….

Disney has dropped an episode of Hannah Montana from its US schedule after they were flooded with complaints about its subject matter.

Parents who viewed a preview of the episode ‘No Sugar, Sugar’, sees Hannah (Miley Cyrus) dealing with a friend’s diabetes diagnosis, and giving a feel-good message to the audience that the disease can be successfully dealt with. But parents objected to the content, leading to it being replaced.

A show spokesperson said: “During the scriptwriting stage of the Hannah Montana episode in question, the matter of depicting a character with diabetes was reviewed by our Standards and Practices executives who consulted with medical experts to inform the story and ensure that it was told responsibly.

“Notwithstanding the measures we took, and based on the episode’s preview and early feedback from parents (who saw it on Subscription Video on Demand and/or mobile platforms), we removed the episode from Sunday’s schedule and are now re-evaluating it.”

So what are we to make of this? Either the show handled diabetes flippantly or some parents have no backbone…I’m tipping the latter.

  1. I never saw the commercial for the show for that night but from what i heard They need to find out more information about diabetes. My daughter is a Type 1 and she can have sugar foods but with meals that she gets insulin for to help the pancreas break it down. She does have snacks with sugar but not snack that have tons of sugar like skittles, sweet tarts. She can have snacks with sugar like rice crispy treats, ice cream, cake, and even chocolate as long as its not very high in sugar.I would like them to have this topic on the show but be more accurate and help people to understand this subject. My girls love watching Hanna but if they seen this show they would be upset that they did it wrong.

  2. Not giving them sugar was it? Really?

Are you honestly suggesting that children with no training other than a Hannah Montana episode are going to be intervening in hypoglycemic episodes?

    This is absolutely ridiculous.

  3. since when is diabetes controversial? when childhood obesity is so high and so many kids actually do have the disease; it’s a smart thing to do to address it on a show that has so many children watching…I really can’t see the problem.

  4. Staggering , yet American shows have no trouble showing kids ‘binging out at fast food joints in their shows or kids drinking supposedly under age.

How long have they (Disney) been in TV biz – 5 mins.
Heaven help if they did medical show like ER

  5. i have been lucky enough to have seen this episode thorugh youtube & i thought that it was a great episode teachink kids that even if they have something wrong (such as diabeites in this case) they can stil live a happy normal life & it is nothing to be ashamed of.
a great episode with a great message. stupid idea to remove it in my opinion

  6. KT makes a good point… if you drum into kids that sugar is a bad thing for a child with diabetes, sugar will be the last thing they would give during an attack leading to dire circumstances… that kind of thinking could be confusing for children to comprehend, but you need to give the kids a chance to learn…

  7. KT thanks for the input. It certainly would have helped if initial reports could have included this in the story. It raised more questions than it answered.

Sounds like some medical advisors need their head read.

  8. Mostly the episode was handled well and was quite informative about diabetes. But the big problem was that all through the episode, they made a big deal about the diabetic character never being allowed to have sugar. It was a major theme in the episode. This is an issue because although people with diabetes generally need to avoid sweet foods, in an emergency situation they must be given sweet food, i.e. when they have a hypoglycaemic attack. If they don’t get sugar, they’ll go into a coma and die.

  9. this is truely wierd. You would have thought that parents would have welcomed an episode like this. Maybe they just handled it with too much toung in cheek? some episodes are like that. but it certainly baffles.

  10. Thats shocking…ppl these days are hopeless and wont let there kids be exposed to anything! Id imagine that Hannah Montana and Disney would have dealt with the issue well, and it would have been a good lesson to all kids on how to deal with this real life issue – u cant hide kids from everything – this is reality.
