Kubrick fest for SBS

Movie fans are getting six Kubrick films and a 'documentary' next week on SBS.

If you are a fan of the great director Stanley Kubrick there are a number of tantalising treats coming up on SBS next week.

For the second time the broadcaster will screen a selection of his works including the films 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Barry Lyndon, Lolita and A Clockwork Orange.

But there is also a peculiar “spoof documentary” suggesting that Kubrick might have been behind a fake landing on the moon, with Kubrick directing CIA agents as astronauts: The Dark Side of the Moon.

9:35pm Sun Nov 16
Movie: 2001: A Space Odyssey – Stanley Kubrick’s Oscar-winning masterpiece traces an expedition to the moon, Jupiter and beyond, and imagines the future evolution of humanity. A group of ape-like creatures – primitive humans – discover the use of bones as weapons in a quarrel over a waterhole. Jump forward 1000s of years, and an American expedition finds a mysterious black monolith – an obvious alien artefact – on the Moon. Another expedition is sent to Jupiter, where a second monolith has been discovered. But during the journey the ship’s computer, HAL 9000, develops paranoia. Stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood and Douglas Rain. (From the UK and US, in English) (Sci-Fi) (1968) (Rpt) G CC WS

10:50pm Mon Nov 17
The Dark Side of the Moon – This spoof documentary plays on the conspiracy theory that the moon landing in 1969 never took place, but was pre-produced by Stanley Kubrick. The story is told by Kubrick’s widow, Christiane, and interviews pieced together with Donald Rumsfeld, Henry Kissinger, the former White House Chief of Staff General Alexander Haig, Richard Nixon’s adviser Lawrence Eagleburger and former CIA Director Vernon Walters. They appear to be putting forward the idea that President Richard Nixon asked for fake footage to be shot at the MGM studios in England, with CIA agents acting the parts of the astronauts. All those involved in the scam were sworn to secrecy and given new identities. But Nixon, fearing they would talk, sent the CIA after four collaborators. The fugitives were chased to Vietnam, and Nixon deployed 150,000 men and half the US Sixth Fleet to hunt them down and eliminate them. The only one to survive was Kubrick, who locked himself away in his studios from then on. So the story goes. (From France, in English and French, English subtitles) (Entertainment) (Rpt) PG CC

When Charlotte sends Lolita away to an all-girls camp and plans to send her to boarding school, Humbert and Charlotte argue. Charlotte storms off, and, in his study, finds Humbert’s diary, in which he has expressed his feelings for both her and for Lolita. Directed by Stanley Kubrick and stars James Mason, Shelley Winters, Sue Lyon and Peter Sellers. (From the UK and US, in English) (Drama) (1962) (Rpt) M (A)

At the end of the war, the Prussian police minister gives Barry a position in the household of the Chevalier de Balibari, a conman and gambler, so that Barry can spy on him. Barry and the Chevalier get on famously, as both are Irish, and Barry becomes the pupil of the conman. In this company, Barry is admitted to the highest social circles in Europe. Movie: The Shining – Based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, The Shining is said to be director Stanley Kubrick’s scariest movie, and one of the scariest films of all time. He and his wife Wendy and young son Danny will be the only occupants for five months, while the hotel is closed for winter. Jack hopes the peace and seclusion will inspired him to write again, but the place hides a dark secret and soon begins to affect his sanity. 1. Kubrick has to be my favourite director. I purchased Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures book and dvd not long ago.

2001 and Barry Lyndon are ones to look out for 🙂 Well……..they all are!

  2. Didnt SBS do this not long ago? Maybe within the last couple of years? I remember because I watched both Full Metal Jacket and Clockwork Orange for the first time.

  3. I didn’t know that SBS had it’s own MAV15+ version of the AV15+ rating the commercial channels use. Does anyone know why SBS does this?

SBS could probably show the R18+ versions of A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket and rate them MAV15+. Even if ACMA had a problem with SBS doing this in the end ACMA has no real power over SBS (that’s my understanding) they can only decide if SBS failed their own SBS guidelines and ACMA can’t fine or suspend SBS.

  4. Thanks for the heads up, David. 🙂

I remembered seeing an ad for this last week while watching Newstopia. I’ll definately want to catch The Shining, although I’ll make an effort to watch as many of them as I can. 🙂

  5. Agree everything Neon KItten has said, plus a couple of the films, namely Clockwork and Full Metal, are R rated and would of been cut for screening on sbs, heck, even pay edits his films also(eyes wide shut on movie extra, if you have seen that it was one hatchett job done to it).

  6. The doco sounds intriguing.

The movies, though, are wasted on SBS with obnoxious watermark and ad breaks. They’re all available cheap on DVD, or in pristine quality on Blu-ray (on which 2001 is a revelation, by the way)
