Happy (belated) birthday to legendary Aussie TV mogul Reg Grundy who last night was guest of honour at a lavish and exclusive dinner at Sydney’s Sheraton on the Park.
The party thrown by his wife Joy to celebrate his 85th year included some of the industry’s veteran names including Brian Henderson, Barry Crocker, Mike Munro, Larry Emdur, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, David Leckie, Gary O’Callaghan, Barry Unsworth and, in video tributes, Barry Humphries and Gordon Ramsay, who once worked as his personal chef on the yacht Idolwood II.
News Limited reports that the hotel ballroom was transformed into an old TV soundstage with blue velvet curtains framing the entertainment. David Campbell sang I Did It My Way reworked as He Did It His Way, Nick Twining performed a number from Billy Elliot and Bjorn Again sang Mama Mia in reference to Abba The Movie, the tour film Grundy produced -which airs tonight on cable TV.
The entertainment began with Munro, carrying his signature red book, taking to the stage with a TV crew and welcoming the 230 guests before he introduced Grundy with the line, “I’ve been after you for 20 years to do this . . .”.
Grundy responded, “And you’ll be chasing me for another 20.”
Sounds like a great night. Hopefully everyone was wearing their best Reg Grundies.
