Change is not just the domain of commercial television breakfast shows. ABC2’s News Breakfast summer co-host Joe O’Brien will replace Barrie Cassidy as permanent co-host alongside Virginia Trioli.
O’Brien, a journalist and presenter with the ABC since 1995 on ABC News bulletins and the national Midday Report has also been co-hosting on Fridays.
Cassidy stepped into the role temporarily following the arrest of Peter Lloyd in Singapore. Lloyd was originally earmarked for the role.
According to the ABC, Cassidy “will continue to appear on the program providing political analysis and commentary”.

I love waking up to Joe!
Joe suited the show a lot more than Barrie.
They should show the first hour of breakfast (6-7) on ABC1 as well as on ABC2.
And once ABC3 lanuches dump ABC Kids from ABC1 all together.
That’s disappointing…I also find him rather awkward, like he’s trying too hard to come across as “relaxed and chatty”. And someone needs to tell him how to sit better – it’s prolly hard being on a couch, but he slouches towards poor Virginia quite badly.
Thumbs up to Paul Kennedy – comfortable delivery and easy on the eye to boot!
I watched it briefly last week and thought Barry Cassidy was far better – never seen this jo guy before and he appeared awkward and stiff!
This show really needs to be on ABC1 and kids programmes moved to ABC2 (don’t about 50% of homes have ABC2 now)
Or at the very least – simmilcast the show on ABC1 from 6am-7am to get wider exposure
+1 more viewer for ABC2 now that I have a digital set top box! 😉
What a shame. I found Joe to be wooden compared to Barrie.
Hopefully he will get better as time goes on.
I’m sure the four people who watch ABC2 will be delighted.
That’s a good move, Barrie already has enough work to do on other ABC TV shows and regardless of that Joe O’Briens onscreen performance is more friendly/relaxed and suited to breakfast time
