Another leaf for Librarians’ book

Frances O'Brien and her bookworm underlings are heading back to Middleton Interactive Library for another series.

ABC comedy The Librarians returns in front of the cameras this week to film its second series.

Co-created by, and starring, Robyn Butler as Head Librarian (Robyn Butler) the series again returns cast members Roz Hammond, Heidi Arena, Keith Brockett, Nicole Nabout, Stephen Ballantyne, Bob Franklin and Kim Gyngell. Butler’s husband Wayne Hope (Stupid, Stupid Man, Very Small Business) returns as her hapless on-screen hubby, while resuming the directorial role behind the camera. That only leaves Josh Lawson off the list.

The series performed well for the ABC in 2007, following a strong comedy audience warm-up by Summer Heights High in the same timeslot. It was also nominated for a prestigious Rose D’or award in Switzerland alongside The Chaser’s War on Everything, The IT Crowd, The Mighty Boosh and My Family.

Robyn Butler said, “We are thrilled to be back making The Librarians as doing the first series was a brilliant experience. If nothing else, we discovered there are two types of people in the world: those who say ‘librarians’ and those who say ‘libarians’.”

It will air later this year.

Press Release:
Australia’s favourite Head Librarian, Frances O’Brien (Robyn Butler) is back! Series two of the highly successful ABC TV comedy series, The Librarians, starts filming this week in Melbourne.

Fans won’t be disappointed…She may not “make the rules” but neurotic Frances certainly bends them and even the community service she was forced to undertake won’t break her unique spirit.

Picking up 12 months down the track, Frances is back working at the Middleton Interactive Learning Centre along with her colourful colleagues – Christine (Roz Hammond), Dawn (Heidi Arena), Ky (Keith Brockett), Nada (Nicole Nabout), Matthew (Stephen Ballantyne) and Neil (Bob Franklin). But to France’s horror, things are not the same… Her Head Librarianship has been challenged, her confidante Father Harris (Kim Gyngell) is away on sabbatical, and a new state-of-the-art technology pod – designed by Nada – threatens to usurp her control over the library.

To make matters worse, the youngest of her wayward daughters has gone feral and her relationship with her pony-tail clad husband Terry (Wayne Hope) is severely tested.

Written, produced and starring Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope, the team behind last year’s highly acclaimed comedy series Very Small Business, The Librarians cemented itself in 2007 as a household favourite.

Robyn Butler says: “We are thrilled to be back making The Librarians as doing the first series was a brilliant experience. If nothing else, we discovered there are two types of people in the world: those who say ‘librarians’ and those who say ‘libarians’.”

ABC TV Executive Producer Amanda Higgs says, “We are genuinely very excited to be checking out a second series of The Librarians with the fantastically talented team lead by creators Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope. It’ll be great to welcome back Frances and the gang, and we are looking forward to some nice surprises in guest cast joining this series.”

Series two of The Librarians will be shot on location over the next six weeks.

Production Credits: A Gristmill Pty Ltd production, written and produced by Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope. Directed by Wayne Hope, ABC TV Executive Producer Amanda Higgs, ABC TV Head of Drama, Miranda Dear.

  1. Haha :). I loved this show from the first time I read about it in the TV guide. Josh Lawson was hilarious as the dyslexic Librarian. It was funny about Frances’ crushes on him at the camp. The hair just reminded me of my Career’s Advisor though, which just made it funnier and all the Racial jokes just made this TV show one of the best since Summer Heights High. Just shows Australian Comedy at it’s best.

  2. Woowoo this is an awesome show! Loved it the first time!
Glad Josh Lawson isn’t going to be on there! Can’t stand him. Have the first season on dvd. Can’t get enough of it. I studied in this field, it’s great to see the ABC make fun of it:)

  3. I never saw this show when it was on air here – while I was visiting NZ in Nov I was channel flicking & came accross it one night. Loved it & when I got home I bought the dvd from J B Hi Fi – excellent series, cant wait for season 2!!!

  4. Hey Craig. Chances are, they’ll play it leading into the second season.

Frankly, I don’t think this show is worth buying on DVD, though I might check out the second season if it airs Wednesdays (assuming that it doesn’t clash with Newstopia).
