Double vision on Twenty/20 cricket
Tonight the Twenty/20 Cricket moves to the GABBA in Brissy.
Nine will no doubt be hoping for another stellar performance. Sunday it obliterated the opposition with a whopping 2m viewers and a 41.3 share over Seven’s 22.1 and TEN’s 18.2. It was the biggest audience of the non-ratings season and peaked at a staggering 2.52m viewers.
Did you catch the opening titles featuring DJ Mark Dynamix and drummer Lucius Borich from Cog? It was very snazzy.
So were the titles for the NFL SuperBowl on FOX last year with DJ AM and Blink 182’s Travis Barker.

The problem I have with it is its poorly executed compared to the original. The Fox football theme has a dance remix done of it and the scratching on the decks really fits in with it. The drums are the driving theme in the whole production and again really fits in.
The Channel 9 version just doesn’t work. The main elements of the theme song aren’t drums or a DJ. Featuring people doing that just doesn’t make sense. If they had of added heavier drums and more electronic elements then the DJ and drummer might have fitted in better.

At least the promo for Underbelly 2 is original… Check out Battlestar Galactica Season 4 Promo on You Tube.
Hey jay, your uni lecturer is probably a washed up has-been or a never was.
Most if not all journalism lecturers have no idea.
And it’s not plagiarism if the concept was licensed.
What would your lecturer say about throwing around allegations without proof?
Hmmmm????
The old footy used to start with Barsnsie or Thorpey or someone doing a version of hank williams jr’s start to monday night football in america. It just doesnt matter. Lucius Borich is a great drummet
Someone mentioned a while back that “Channel Seven copied their news music from America”.
Well, Channel Nine did too….
I agree that people jump on Channel Nine too much though. Who really cares if Channel Nine copied the FOX idea?
Superbowl is on TEN this year….
I’m glad everyone is okay with such blatant plagiarism now. I wonder if my university lecturer will be as forgiving?
Be tuned in the early hours of Feb 2 (possibly SBS?) when 140+ million people watch Nine’s 2010 cricket opener!
I can’t belive the amount of feedback this has caused…. hands up all of those who have never used a previous idea and ran with it…the only problem I have…and i don’t think 9 did anyway.. was if anyone claims a copy to be original… I watched it…didnt really think much about it…and certainly didnt hear anyone claim it was an original… so i can’t see the issue…if you dig deep enuf, you can find copies for everything everywhere.. don’t go re-inventing the wheel make it better…its like the ratings…they can fudge figures to suit their argument…and geez…i’ve devoted to much time to this already….
When something like this happens, do they pay the original authors for the privilege? Surely there is enough similarity to sue otherwise?
hey Nah… good work. The viynl scratching seemed like an awkward fit, but hey mostly it works. and lets not kid ourselves there are no original ideas in almost any of the FTA broadcasters. Sunrise stole Today’s USA’s set, ABC iView is a blatant rip-off of BBC’s iPlayer…. so on so forth…. Its just how it goes when there isnt enough money floating around for broadcaster to feel financially comfortable enough to take risks and develop something original that might fail. on the one hand i find it sad and depressing, but hey this is how the industry survives and Nah… best of luck with your next piece, more power to ya.
Hi… I made this LOL… (p.s. I’m a freelancer and aren’t really associated with 9 at all)
I was shown the Superbowl clip and asked whether I could make something like that, I said ’sure’, and in just over a week, (with the help of a couple of mates) it was finished. I *thoroughly* enjoyed making it, even if it wasn’t an original idea, and the budget was big enough to fit on a shop-a-docket. (cricket tickets all ’round!) Unlike Fox who would’ve had teams of people roto’ing football players, designing storyboards and elements and a room full of compositors. (with a budget big enough to fund the cure for cancer)
Lucius & Mark were awesome, and any chance to give them some exposure, I’m all for. (notice the enlarged PDP logo on Luc’s Bass drum & the enhanced Zildjian logos on his cymbals! (good luck at BDO this year, Cog!) and what’s that on the front of Mark’s console – oh yeah, Long Distance Recordings!) ahem…
In some other ways, this was a bit of a test peice to test the waters and try something that looks nothing like anything the bosses have seen before. It worked, (they loved it!) and now we’ve earned the trust of the bean counters, we can try something a bit more out of the box next time.
Wow, Travis has a hard-on for Nine. Very defensive.
I personally dont have a problem with the intro. I have relised that tv networks dont have any guts or new ideas because of the amount of money at risk because if the concept doesnt work they will lose a lot of money and execs will lose their job.
I can’t believe the conversation on this page.
All networks have used overseas concepts for decades…
Seven’s news for years and their network IDs were direct copies of NBC.
Ten has used Fox concepts in their network promos.. Nine’s Still the One was of course ABC America.
Even ABC Australia borrowed the name of a Canadian bulletin and a theme from Channel 4 UK for the ill fated “The National” in the 80s.
This is such a non issue… but then I’m assuming that most of the people here are like the posters on certain other media critique websites… ie barely teenagers so they probably can’t remember beyond last year’s finale of Home and Away
Ch9 showing thier originality once again, and with MXC… err i mean wipeout coming soon on Ch9, they are kings of originality (cough)!
Wat the hell is the problem with this? I don’t see why it’s a big deal. The opener looks cool, does it matter where the idea came from. Another thing is all the networks copy ideas not just Nine. Also Nine’s 2009 slate might have a lot of unoriginal ideas, but at least it’s their own productions, unlike Seven who just take successful shows from other networks (i.e. Kath & Kim, Thank God You’re Here)
I guess it’s their “ONE” chance at using this…
I guess Travis it will require Americans to indefinitely do our thinking for us, that’s why it ain’t cool.
But in saying that, advertisers for years have used movies as “inspiration” for “their creations”.
I’m sure the 9/NRL/Fox enterprise were inspired by the NFL to introduce video replays for referees rather than really needing it.
From the network bringing you in Oh9 – Wipeout Australia, Aussie Ladette to Lady and Aussie Secret Millionaire comes ummm…. not to mention Mission Pieces (Find my Family ripoff), Weekend Today (Weekend Sunrise ripoff)….etc etc… do they have any local ideas anymore????
Dan –
1. Most of Australia wouldn’t even care about this, so your pretty sad to even think about it.
2. It’s only an opener to a cricket game! It’s not like they copied a whole network appearance or anything. Get over it!
3. Seven lovers (or Nine haters) are the only ones that care about this, because it’s just another reason to bag Nine.
4. If Seven produced this the reaction would be minimial or nothing.
Actually I’ve made no suggestion it was “ripped off” … who’s to say Nine didn’t acquire the concept from FOX.
All I’ve done is point to the likeness.
Travis – they weren’t “inspired” or took an idea an idea and made it their own. They ripped it and slapped on some cosmetic changes to give it a cricket theme. If the US had cricket i’m certain we would have the exact same opener and they would have had the work experience kid to change the network logo. Every time I see that intro I’m going to be thinking how cheap 9 were.
We have some brilliant designers out there shaking their heads in shame at the industry. How does anyone expect growth and innovation when one of the most successful national sports show decides that its cheaper to rip it from the SuperBowl opener?
You really think that if channel 7 did this we would ignore that fact?
Could it have possibly been a “Template” for want of a better word?
Maybe the same Graphic House?…. I dont really see the issue honestly
That is hilarious! 9 have once again proven just how unoriginal they are. Thanks for pointing it out David.
Its amazing how networks have the balls copy other networks or people without a worry, but once someone does something to annoy them, boom they take action. Channel 7 and packedtotherafters.com.au for a good example.
Who honestly cares that Channel Nine took a really cool idea from America and developed it here to suit an Australian audience?
I am absolutely sick and tired of the bias nature of members on this site towards the Seven Network. If this was played on Seven you would all be congratulating them and saying how wonderful the opener is.
It seems Seven can’t do anything wrong, while anything Nine does is wrong. What about Seven’s news theme…that is copied from America. What about Sunrise…their street-side set was a copy off the Today show in America. Along with everything we see on television these days.
You are all pathetic…
will 9 ever do anything original.
lol. they are so much the same.
nothing good on 9 will ever be an original idea
I feel I should add, yes, I know Nine didn’t copy off Seven, but I was just making a point that the networks do copy each other because they see that it works.
Nine aren’t the only culprits, Jerome. When Nine was number 1, Seven copied off them for years.
i saw this and thought is was quite good, but then, when it’s ch9 i guess you have to think; so who did they copy it from?
lol
More originality from Nine?
Wouldn’t go that far….helps to have good sources.
hahar, nothing gets past david
I hate when someone complains youtube pulls a video like that. It means we actually have to type something like “Twenty 20 Cricket Opener” to get another version!
I think it’s pretty poor form when the top of their field start dressing up o/s product as their own. So much for Nine being sports visionaries!
i guess they were hoping no one would notice… how embarassing
too funny!
