Freema Agyeman back for more Doctor Who

"Martha Jones" is reportedly back for one of the four Who specials, reunited with David Tennant.

dr-whofreemaGood news from the land of Who with word that Freema Agyeman will re-unite with David Tennant for one of the four specials being made by the BBC.

Watching her guest appearances in last year’s season was a reminder of how good she was, even though she only lasted one season in a full time capacity.

The Sun reports the move is a surprise given she apparently annoyed Who chiefs after she signed up for ITV1’s Law and Order: London.

Writer Russell T. Davies was then forced to tear up scripts for Who spin-off Torchwood, in which she’d been given a starring role (although she did appear in series two).

At this stage it’s unclear what exactly Martha  Jones will be up to in the new show, but it shouldnt take a rocket scientist, or even a time traveller, to work out that Who needs a smart, intuitive sidekick for his adventures.

  1. I believe RTD is a genius, pure and simple, and people have just been spoilt and have forgotten how lucky we are. We have a brilliant writer managing to restart Dr Who giving it the modern sensibility while retaining the essence of the original. Also someone with enough clout to bring other credible people to the project. And make it popular! I was a total cynic after the disappointment of the 1996 movie, but now i’m as much of a devotee as I was as a child.

I’m not saying we can’t ever criticise him but I am surprised to hear he is a pantomime writer – what about ‘Turn Left’ and ‘Midnight’? Sure, the last episode cast-of-thousands-drive-the-Tardis scene was ridiculous, but what about the devastating Donna scenes that truly concluded it? And when we talk about OTT let’s not forget the kids. My nephew recently told me how much he had loved watching the Doctor running with the Olympic torch in “Fear Her” – the moment that had me screaming in cringing embarrassment. (Coming up soon in the Tuesday night repeats, people – you have been warned.)

And finally yay re Martha returning. I thought she had the world’s toughest job, following Rose, and did bloody well. To say she is one of the weakest companions just shows how spoilt we are again – think back to the Harry Sullivans and Adrics of yesteryear!

sorry David this is too long. Feel free to cut it down or not post it.

  2. Oh come on this is Russell T Davies. There’ll be everyone in the final episode from Sarah Jane, Capt Jack, Rose, Martha, Daleks, Cybermen, The Master. You name it.

  3. They’ve got to have a companion or two for Tennant’s send-off…hopefully Freema’s in his final episode, and fingers crossed for a return from Catherine Tate (the best companion ever!). How sad would it be if Dr Ten regenerated with none of his best friends by his side to oversee the regeneration? I’d say Rose’s story is over and done with though? But never say never in the Whoniverse!

  4. “Writer Russell T. Davies was then forced to tear up scripts for Who spin-off Torchwood…”

    Good!

Davies not writing any of season 2 of Torchwood was the best thing that could have happened to that show.

The man had immense talent as a writer once, but success seemed to suddenly turn him into a pantomime writer.
