Golden oldies lift Summer viewing

Summer movies with Kate Hepburn, Liz Taylor, Ginger Rogers and James Stewart? What a treat!

There are some classic Hollywood movies (and one contemporary flick) buried in the schedule this weekend and beyond.

It all starts this arvo with Rita Hayworth in Somerset Maugham’s Miss Sadie Thompson (US 1953) 1:00pm today on ABC1.

At 6:30pm tonight on Seven, Julie Andrews sparkles in the glorious score of Mary Poppins (US 1964).

If you’ve never seen Stage Door (US 1937) with Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers (pictured), Ann Miller, Lucille Ball and Eve Arden letting rip with classic, bitchy barbs it crackles along 8:35pm tonight on ABC2.

At 10pm Desperate Housewives‘ Felicity Huffman puts in a powerful performance as a pre-op transgender in Transmaerica on SBS.

Hepburn also appears alongside Liz Taylor and Montgomery Clift in Tennessee Williams’ play Suddenly Last Summer 11:30pm Sunday on ABC1.

And on Tuesday James Stewart and Doris Day star in Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much (US 1957) 11:30pm on ABC1.

Soon we’ll also be treated to The Big Sleep, Dr Strangelove the original Cape Fear and Silent Running.

Summer just got a lift…

  1. Yes, more recent movies filmed in 2:xx:1 aspect ratios, seem to be never shown correctly on TV. But I was referring more to older movies produced in widescreen, that continue to be shown pan and scan on the digital channels.

To expand on my previous example, three out of five movies of the Alfred Hitchcock Season on the ABC2, were shown pan and scan.

  2. The problem with many older movies, is they often aren’t shown in their correct aspect ratios.

‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’ was shown pan and scan on the ABC2, when last shown as part of the Alfred Hitchcock Season.
