Matildas live on ABC1

ABC1 will broadcast two international friendly women’s football matches live to air.

ABC1 will broadcast the two international friendly women’s football matches between Australia’s Matildas and Italy live  to air.

Both games, the first on Saturday, January 31st at Parramatta Stadium in Sydney and the second on Saturday, February 7th at Canberra Stadium, will be broadcast from 4pm nationally on ABC1. It will air live in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania.

Head of ABC TV Sports and Events, Mr Iain Knight, said women’s football is one of the fastest growing sports among young female athletes in Australia.

“ABC TV is thrilled to show two of the best women’s football teams in the world in these two very classy and tough encounters.

“Women’s football is exploding in Australia and ABC TV is proud to bring top quality women’s football to all Australians through our broadcasts of the Matildas and the W-League,“ he said.

The Matildas, who are currently ranked 14th in the world, defeated 12th ranked Italy 3 – 0 in their most recent meeting in June last year as part of the Peace Queen Cup in Korea.

This is the first visit of the Italian women’s team to Australia since 1999.

  1. Hopefully ABC follows this up with coverage of Olyroos, Young Socceroos, Joeys, Young Matildas, Under 17 Matildas matches in the future. The ABC will probably never be able to afford the Socceroos, but it would be good for all 8 national teams to have coverage

  2. Now it’s time for any free-to-air networks to show the men’s national football games live instead of pay-tv.

Good on you ABC1 for first airing the W-League (women’s domestic league) in 2008-2009, and now the womens international games.
