Queensland courts Logies

More on the claims that the Bligh Government wants to hijack the Logies from Victoria....

Late last month there was a dirty rumour that the Queensland government was trying to lure the Logie Awards northward.

Today it’s back in the news with PBL Media chief executive Ian Law saying it was “a possibility”. He added there had been “some incentive” offered to do so.

As we know PBL Media is under financial duress at the moment, meaning it’s actually a reasonable prospect.

According to The Australian Bligh Government representatives offered to pay significant relocation costs, most likely to the Gold Coast (where the Screen Producers Association hold their annual conference).

Other incentives are also believed to have been offered.

The awards have been held in recent years at Melbourne’s Crown Casino, which is controlled by James Packer’s listed gaming group Crown. But Mr Packer is no longer on PBL Media’s board.

The awards have previously been held in Sydney too, and the announcement of nominees regularly takes place at Sydney’s Luna Park. But Melbourne remains the traditional home of the big night.

If the Bligh Government underwrites PBL’s expenses don’t be surprised if the Logies does indeed make a move…

  1. Alfagirl you must have a very shallow life if you care about the Logies – not to mention your rudeness in correcting people who can’t spell propper!!

  2. I was overseas when the 2008 Logies were on, so I recorded it on the PVR. When I watched it upon my return I couldnt believe how dreadful it was. No host, no international guests (Im pretty sure thats right), and the performances, as usual, had low sound quality with vocals being much lower than the music. I ended up watching it in 4x speed to get though it as quick as possible.
The filming location is fine, Melbourne is a great place to host it, and many shows are made there. They just need to improve on the night, aim it more at the intellegent people, and not lowest common denominator. Add better performances, and not leave it to the anoying voice-over guy to guide it along. Bring back one dedicated host, and also, give all shows a chance to win, don’t have TV Week tell us what shows and actors we should vote for. That way, shows like Newstopia can win, who actually deserve it.

  3. i really hope it stays in melbourne. it is so awkward during a speech when people have to work around “soandso couldn’t be bothered with this and is not here”

most actors/personalities live or atleast work in melbourne for city homicide, underbelly, rush, canal road and most of the studio shows like australias got talent, DWTS, singing bee, and DealOND.

  4. You are all waiting for my reaction, like Joh’s chooks coming for feeding, looking for tidbits for the 6pm news…

The answer is… I am all for a Queensland based Logies, but the Gold Coast will only make the event look tacky. The capital, Brisbane has a lot more TV history behind it, being the spiritual birthplace of television in this country (with 2009 being the 75th anniversary of the first amatuer TV transmissions in Australia from Brisbane inner-city suburb Spring Hill to Ipswich) and is in need of a annual major event to lure tourists in more than the Gold Coast. Brisbane and the Logies? Don’t you worry about that…

  5. i don’t mind where it is in aus but i would like to see it leave crown casino just so that it isn’t so much of a packer scoop. (broadcast on his ex-network, directed by his magazine, in his casino)

if it turns out to be like last year it will be an extended add for ch7, this year with more from rafters, factuals, and maybe city homicide so it amazes me that 9 are so keen to be the broadcaster, but i guess they don’t think that way, they just want the money and ratings for that night.

  6. Can’t we move Logies to Tassie or Tom Price WA or Canberra and see if “media starlets attend.
After all, who cares bar the egos of some of these “talents”
One day they might do something for community like showing awards for best community project or hand out freebies to welfare workers – they could do with complimentary hotel stays more than TV folk.
Ship off the logies to “an out of the way place, offer stuff up luxury and then see who real sincere TV folk are !

  7. Screen Producers conference will be moving to Sydney either next year or the year after. Same with the IF Awards held at the same time. So if QLD is losing these events, no wonder they are trying for the Logies.

  8. It would weaken the Logies Brand and Reputation by selling out to somewhere like the Gold Coast or outside of a TV making hub.
Would be like holding the Emmys in Miami because Florida wanted a notch on its belt..

  9. i find that the logies always offer high class entertainment and the awards are a good balance of people’s choice and bigwig’s choice (both are strongly needed for their own reasons). and i usually agree with how the awards go out. It’s a very important part of the tv calendar.

I live in melbourne and would not mind seeing it somewhere else for a one-off just so long as it keeps its roots in melbourne.

i’d also like to see another broadcast network step up. or maybe all 3 simulcasting, wouldn’t that be something.

  10. This is just so wrong. There is no good reason for it to leave its sentimental and traditional home.

If it happens then we will know that channel 9 is nothing but a whore chasing “incentives”.

  11. Queensland doesn’t have a big ‘tv industry’ up there. The Logies should always be a part of Melbourne, due to their huge part of tv history. Sydney should be the second option of histing the Logies
